Statistics Sweden (SCB) via Kolada

Most municipality statistics come from SCB's open database via Kolada (the Municipality and Region Database). The following indicators are used:

• Population (N01951): Number of residents in the municipality
• Population growth (N01963): Percentage population change
• Average age (N00959): Average age in the municipality
• Foreign background (N01950): Share with foreign background
• Average income (N00906): Average earned income in SEK
• Unemployment (N02280): Unemployment rate
• Tax rate (N00900): Total municipal tax rate
• House prices (N07915): Average price for houses (tSEK)
• Apartment prices (N07908): Average price per sqm for apartments
• New construction (N07916): Number of newly built homes
• Higher education (N01982): Share with post-secondary education

Statistics Sweden sub-area statistics (RegSO, DeSO, localities)

In addition to the Kolada statistics at municipality level, since May 2026 we have a separate pipeline that processes 38 Statistics Sweden tables from the Statistics Atlas and breaks the statistics down into Statistics Sweden's smaller regional divisions. This is what powers the map's "RegSO mode", where you can click a district or residential area within a municipality and see income, population, education level and voter turnout for that specific area.

• 9 topic blocks: demographics, income & economy, labour market, housing, health, education, elections, transport and area
• 4 geographic levels: municipality (290), RegSO (3,013 regional statistical areas), locality (about 2,000) and DeSO (about 6,000 demographic statistical areas)
• 15 priority KPIs active in the map's Query Builder: population, share aged 65+, share foreign-born, median income, economic standard, post-secondary education, employment, ill-health figure, voter turnout, ownership tenure, rental tenure, detached houses, buildings from before 1940 and passenger cars in traffic
• Raw data: about 25 GB of CSV (CP1252) fetched via Statistics Sweden's Statistics Atlas, processed locally into JSON aggregates: about 60 MB at municipality level and 149 MB at RegSO level

Election results

Election results by municipality and party come from the Swedish Election Authority's open data. This includes parliamentary election results by party (M, S, SD, C, V, KD, L, MP and others).

Municipal governance

Information about political governance in municipalities: which parties are in the ruling coalition and who is chair of the municipal executive board.

Educational institutions

Data about universities, colleges and folk high schools in each municipality is compiled to show educational opportunities on the map and municipality pages.

Map data and geographic boundaries

Municipality and county boundaries, railway network and locality data are sourced from OpenStreetMap via Overpass API and processed locally into GeoJSON. The map engine is Leaflet.

Satellite map (Sentinel-2)

When you select satellite mode on the map, Sentinel-2 imagery from the European Copernicus programme is shown. The dataset is "cloudless 2023": clouds have been filtered out and the images are aggregated over the whole year to give an even view. We host the imagery ourselves (about 900 MB packed) so we don't hit an external tile server on every page view.

Places and brands

Over 313,000 places across 173 categories are sourced from OpenStreetMap and shown as filterable map layers: 134,000 from core categories (restaurants, shops, schools, hospitals, parks, etc.), 179,000 from extra categories (bus stops, peaks, wind turbines, rune stones, defibrillators, etc.), and around 13,000 branded locations (ICA, McDonald's, Apoteket, etc.). Places are enriched with municipality codes via point-in-polygon matching so each POI can be filtered per municipality.

• 61 core categories: food & drink, health, education & culture, civic, transport, leisure & sport, retail, services
• 63 brands: grocery stores, pharmacies, fast food, electronics, gyms, banks, fuel stations, etc.
• 112 extra categories: nature (peaks, waterfalls, caves), cultural heritage (rune stones, ancient sites, castles, ruins), infrastructure (lighthouses, wind turbines, water towers), sport (football, tennis, golf, disc golf), emergency equipment (defibrillators, life rings), public fixtures (toilets, waste bins, mailboxes), etc.
• Enrichment: each place gets a 4-digit Swedish municipality code so categories can be filtered per municipality
• Metadata per place: name, opening hours, phone, website, municipality (where OSM has the data)

Public transport & timetables

When you click "Load timetables" on a municipality page, a summary of public transport appears: number of stops/stations, routes, weekday/weekend departures, first/last departure, and top stations with routes. No live integration is used; the data is pre-computed from GTFS Sweden 3 Static roughly once a month and stored locally as per-municipality JSON.

• Per-municipality content: stops, routes, operators, departures Mon–Fri/Sat/Sun, first/last departure, top stations with routes and destinations
• Ferries to islands: automatically detected (Gotland, Stockholm archipelago) and linked out to Destination Gotland and Waxholmsbolaget, because their timetables are not available as open APIs

Weather & climate

Current weather is fetched in real time from Open-Meteo. Climate statistics (typical climate) are stored as static data and generated yearly from Open-Meteo's historical weather API.

• Climate statistics: Previous full year data: average temperature, max/min temperature, precipitation, rain and snow days, average wind and sunshine hours per day

Wikipedia

Descriptions and images for individual municipalities are fetched in real time from Wikipedia's REST API. The information is displayed as a summary on each municipality page.

• Content: summary text (extract) + one hero image per municipality (about 90 MB total for all 290 municipalities)
• Updates: the entire cache is rebuilt manually about once a quarter, because Wikipedia text and images rarely change at the municipality level

Community & Culture

Information about sports clubs, associations, popular sports and cultural organisations in municipalities. Data covers teams in top leagues (SHL, Allsvenskan, Superettan etc.) as well as local associations and cultural institutions.

Active job listings

Every night at 03:15 we fetch a fresh snapshot of all vacancies across Sweden from the Swedish Public Employment Service's open JobSearch API. For each municipality we count the number of active listings and the distribution across the eight largest occupational fields. This is used as a signal for where the jobs are right now, that is not historical trends but what is actually being advertised today.

• Content per municipality: total number of active listings plus the top 8 occupational fields (e.g. Data/IT, Sales, Healthcare, Education)
• Updates: daily around 03:15 Swedish time via an automated pipeline on our VPS
• Where it appears: the municipality page ("Jobs & economy" tab), the statistics page (the "Active jobs" column), the wanted list (sorting and badges), the compare page, and as a filterable KPI in the map
