Moving guide · five steps

Step by step to your new town

Short answer: Find places that suit you, work out what life costs there, choose housing and school, and tick off the practical bits in good time. Start three months before the move.

1Find the place.

Start broad. The quiz asks what you care about, such as nature, commuting and peace and quiet, and suggests ten municipalities. Then turn on layers on the map to see how they compare.

2Work out the cost.

Tax, rent, house prices and commuting vary a lot between municipalities. Compare two or three candidates side by side before you decide.

3Choose housing.

Zoom in on districts and urban areas. Look at the distance to the station, shops and green space, and join the housing queue early if you plan to rent.

4School and preschool.

If you have children: see which schools are nearby, and apply for a place in the new municipality as soon as you know the address. Preschool often has a four-month queue.

5The practical bits.

Report the move to the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) no later than one week after moving day. The post office can forward your mail for up to a year. Electricity, broadband and insurance you move yourself.
