Living in the county
Västerbotten is a county in two parts that live on different terms. Along the coast lie Umeå and Skellefteå, two growing towns with jobs, education and a housing shortage. Behind them, forest, river valleys and finally mountains spread out over an inland where no municipality is larger than Lycksele with just over 12,000 inhabitants, and where distance is the first thing you learn about. Winter is long, dark and snowy everywhere, and anyone who moves here had better like it.
The coast pulls, the inland loses
The difference shows most clearly in population change. The county grew fast between 2021 and 2024, only one other county grew more, but it is mainly two municipalities carrying the increase. Skellefteå has grown by just over six per cent thanks to the battery factory, mining and the data centres, and Umeå by two and a half. Almost all the others are shrinking. Dorotea has lost almost seven per cent, Storuman and Åsele four, Vilhelmina almost as much. The average age follows the same pattern: just under 40 in Umeå, almost 50 in Dorotea.
Incomes divide the county in the same way. Skellefteå has the highest median income, over SEK 370,000, and Umeå sits well above the median for Swedish municipalities. In Åsele it is below SEK 300,000, in Bjurholm just above, and Vilhelmina is among the lowest in the country. Inland, wages and education levels are low, but so is unemployment. The county has the lowest unemployment of all 21 counties and one of the highest shares of people with post-secondary education in the country, but that is mostly down to Umeå. Inland, young people start working early, often straight after school, because a small job market quickly takes in those who stay.
Umeå, Skellefteå and the villages around them
Umeå is the largest town in northern Sweden, with just over 135,000 inhabitants, a university, a hospital and a cultural life that punches above its weight. People cycle all year round, and nature is close by. The downside is housing, rental flats above all, and wages that are lower than in the south of the country. The town has no areas at all on the police list of vulnerable areas, and in fact that goes for the whole county.
Skellefteå is a boomtown with a downside. There are plenty of jobs, but finding somewhere to live is hard and expensive, and the usual advice to newcomers is not to hang the whole move on a single company. The town has an airport with direct flights to Stockholm, and ice hockey sits at the centre of its identity.
Around Umeå lie the commuter municipalities. In Vännäs just over half of those in work travel out of the municipality, in Nordmaling over forty per cent, and in Bjurholm, Robertsfors and Vindeln it is common. These are the places people move to for bigger houses and lower prices, with Umeå within an hour by train or car. Vännäs is the clearest example, with frequent trains and buses.
The inland and the mountains
Further west the sparsely populated countryside takes over. Lycksele serves as the inland's small capital, with a swimming pool, a zoo and most of what you need, but Umeå is a good 120 km away. Storuman is a junction where the E12, the E45 and the Inland Railway meet, with the mountain resorts of Tärnaby and Hemavan within the municipality. Vilhelmina has the Wilderness Road and ski slopes in Kittelfjäll, and Sorsele stretches all the way to Ammarnäs. Malå lies 120 km from Skellefteå, and the smallest municipalities, Bjurholm, Dorotea, Sorsele and Åsele, have between just over 2,200 and just under 2,700 inhabitants each.
Everyday life inland requires a car, and the winters are demanding. Many villages have only a grocery shop and perhaps a school, and hospitals and maternity care are further away. Dorotea has no upper secondary school, which makes families with children hesitate, and Robertsfors closed its own. Young people move to the coast to study and do not always come back. Those who move here for peace, nature and cheap housing get it, but should also expect long distances, a thin range of services and a community that often runs through clubs and associations. Safety, on the other hand, is not a weak point. Reported crime is lowest in Norsjö, and vulnerable areas are a problem the whole county is spared.
Västerbotten suits those looking for work in a growing town, or peace and nature inland, and who can cope with darkness and cold. Anyone who wants big city amenities, short distances to southern Sweden or an easy house hunt in the two coastal towns should think twice.

How the municipalities differ
Lowest and highest municipality in the county, latest year in Kolada. There is no county average here: an average of the municipalities would hide the differences.
