Trade, exports and imports: what Sweden sells, to whom and what tariffs do

Short answer: Sweden sold goods worth 2,038 billion kronor and services worth 1,321 billion kronor abroad in 2025. Exports are about half of GDP, twice as much as in 1970. The current account has been in surplus every year since 1994. Machinery and vehicles are the largest product group, and Norway, Germany, the US, Denmark and Finland buy the most. Three counties, Västra Götaland, Stockholm and Skåne, account for just over half of goods exports. After the US tariffs in April 2025 exports there fell, and in August 2025 the EU and the US agreed on a ceiling of 15 percent for most goods.

The balance

The trade and current account balances over time.

The trade balance is goods exports minus goods imports, the services balance the same for services. The current account adds wages, interest and dividends to and from abroad, and transfers such as the EU contribution and foreign aid. A surplus means Sweden earns more abroad than it spends there, and saves the difference in assets abroad.

Export dependence

Exports as a share of GDP.

Exports and imports of goods and services divided by GDP, in current prices. The share shows how open the economy is, not how much exports add to GDP: much of what is exported contains imported parts.

Small countries trade more with the rest of the world than large ones. The table compares Sweden with its neighbours, some large economies and the averages for the EU, the OECD and the world.

The trading partners

Which countries Sweden trades with.

Share of goods exports or goods imports by country, for the six largest in the latest year. Exports are counted by the country where the goods will be used, imports by the country they were shipped from, so imports via the Netherlands and Germany may have been made elsewhere.

The counties

Exports by county.

Statistics Sweden splits goods exports between counties by where the companies' employees work. Exports from a company with its head office in Stockholm and a factory in Västerbotten are thus divided by the employees. About a tenth of exports cannot be placed in any county and are not in the table, nor are companies with small exports to other EU countries. Per inhabitant, Blekinge exports the most, followed by Västra Götaland and Norrbotten.

Investment

Direct investment in and out.

A direct investment is ownership of at least ten percent of a company in another country. The chart shows total assets: what Swedish companies own in subsidiaries abroad and what foreign owners hold in Sweden.

The table shows foreign investment in Sweden by the country of the ultimate owner, not the country where the holding company is registered.

Tariffs

US tariffs in 2025 and exports there.

In April 2025 the US imposed additional tariffs on imports from almost every country. The chart shows goods exports to the US by month.

  1. The agreement between the EU and the US

The EU and the US reached a political agreement on 27 July 2025 and a joint statement on 21 August. The US charges at most 15 percent tariff on almost all goods from the EU, the regular tariff included. The EU removes its tariffs on industrial goods from the US; the regulations were adopted in June 2026 and apply from 1 July 2026 until 2029.

  2. The court and the new tariffs

In February 2026 the US Supreme Court struck down the tariffs based on the emergency law IEEPA. The US then imposed a temporary tariff of 10 percent and from 24 July 2026 a tariff of 10 percent on most goods under another law.

  3. Sector tariffs

On top of the general tariff, the US has special tariffs justified by security: 50 percent on steel, aluminium and copper, 25 percent on semiconductors and heavy vehicles, 15 percent on cars and car parts from the EU and from 31 July 2026 15 percent on pharmaceuticals from the EU.

  4. Vehicles fell the most

Exports to the US fell right after April 2025 and rose somewhat from the end of the year. Vehicles fell the most, followed by pharmaceuticals and electronics. The National Board of Trade had expected a fall of about 16 percent, and for April to November 2025 that is roughly what happened.

Trade agreements

EU trade agreements.

Sweden does not negotiate its own trade agreements; the EU does that for all member states. A free trade agreement lowers or removes tariffs and can also cover services, public procurement and rules. The table shows the status of the EU's main agreements in autumn 2026.

The parties

What the parties want in trade policy.

All parties in the Riksdag basically support Sweden trading with the rest of the world. They differ on how far a trade agreement should set requirements on the environment, climate and human rights, and on individual agreements such as Mercosur.
