Gammelstaden

Gammelstaden lies just west of Luleå and is often counted as the oldest part of the town. Before 1980 the place was called Gammelstad. Today it is a built-up area with just under 4,900 inhabitants in Norrbotten county. The main town Luleå is ten minutes away by car.

Close to everyday life, with a major road across

Most of everyday life can be handled in the town. The school is within walking distance but not right around the corner, and altogether there are several schools and preschools in Gammelstaden, among them Öhemsskolan and Kyrkbyskolan. A health centre and dentists are on the spot. Within three kilometres there are three pharmacies and five grocery stores, among them Willys, Coop and ICA Maxi, as well as about ten restaurants and fast-food places, a bakery, a swimming pool and a hotel. For most people the major road lies across the street, which is noticeable in everyday life.

Around the houses it is close to both forest and water, the forest edge lies right next to the buildings and Gammelstadsfjärden, a large body of water of nearly 1,300 hectares, is a couple of minutes' walk away. Railway and power line are within walking distance, not in the middle of the built-up area. A more troublesome feature is that contaminated land is found at about seventy sites in the town, the nearest a couple of minutes' walk from the centre.

To central Luleå it is a short car ride, and that is where people go for what is not available locally. Södra Sunderbyn, another built-up area in the municipality, is reached by bike or car. To the big cities in the south it is over six hours by car.

The area around Gammelstaden has a relatively young population, with just over a quarter under 20. Most in the area are unmarried.

Gammelstaden suits someone who wants Luleå's range nearby but to live in a calmer, older district with nature and water on the doorstep. Someone who wants to live entirely undisturbed by traffic should not count on the major road being invisible in everyday life.
