Bureå is a built-up area with a little over 2,500 inhabitants in Skellefteå municipality in Västerbotten, twenty kilometres south of Skellefteå and about 116 kilometres north of Umeå. The place was formerly a distinctly industrial town and is today a town with extensive commuting to Skellefteå, a quarter of an hour away by car.
Daily life is close but not dense. The sea is a couple of minutes' walk from most houses and the forest is across the road. It is walking distance but not close to the food shop and the school. The town has Coop, a petrol station, a pharmacy, a library, two restaurants, two cafés, a campsite and a gym. A couple of schools are in the town, and there are a handful of playgrounds within a few kilometres. There are a couple of museums, including LEGO-verkstan. The police are far away and the railway station several tens of kilometres away, so most things require a car. The ground bears traces of industry, with about ten registered contaminated land sites, and a flood risk is a couple of minutes' walk from the centre.
Club life is broad for the size. Bureå IF, the local heritage society, the snowmobile club, the boat club, the swimming society, the shooting guild and two fishing conservation associations on Bureälven are among the more visible. The area around the town has both many children and many older people: a little over a quarter are under twenty and a quarter are over sixty-five.
Bureå suits someone who wants to live by the sea in a town with an active club life and commute to Skellefteå. Anyone who wants trains or a wide selection close by will have to look elsewhere.
