Alfta is a built-up area in Ovanåker municipality in south-western Hälsingland and the church village of Alfta socken, with a little over 2,400 inhabitants. Edsbyn, the municipality's main town, is a quarter of an hour away by car, and it is three and a half hours to Stockholm.
Daily life is walking distance but not close: the food shop and school are for most people, and the town has ICA, Hemköp, two schools, three restaurants, a hotel, a pharmacy, a petrol station, a fire station and a sports and swimming hall. The library is far away, a car journey, and so is the nearest café. There are no trains: the nearest station is several tens of kilometres away, and the bus leaves from Alfta busstation.
Water is near. Norrsjön is a couple of minutes' walk away, and so is the bathing spot, while the campsite is walking distance but not close. The fields are across the road and the forest right next to the houses. About twenty contaminated land sites are registered in the town, the nearest a couple of minutes' walk from the centre, and a known flood risk is walking distance but not close. Industry is a couple of minutes' walk away for most.
Hälsingegårdar are found within a few kilometres, including Ol-Anders and Löka. The area around the town is older: close to a third are over sixty-five and a little over a fifth under twenty. There is a stage in Forsparken.
Alfta suits someone who wants a lake, forest and calm and is used to a car. Anyone who commutes by train or wants a big city selection nearby does not belong here.
