Runt om finns badhus, sporthallar och Hive Arena för hockeyn, och i skogarna utanför ligger flera campingplatser och de internationellt kända Treehotel och Arctic Bath. Harads, Gunnarsbyn och de mindre orterna i omlandet har det nödvändigaste, men för utbudet får man in till Boden tätort, och Luleå och Kallax flygplats ligger en halvtimme bort för resten."},{"type":"p","text":"Det som genomsyrar nästan varje samtal om Bodens framtid är H2 Green Steel. Den planerade ståltillverkningen är ortens stora hopp, med en fabrik som mäts i kilometer och rekrytering i stor skala. Boden is completely dead after six in the evening, some say, with a thin range of restaurants and entertainment and a feeling of having got stuck in the 1950s. Others, not least native Norrbottnians, call that big-brother-little-brother whining and argue that Boden is a perfectly ordinary small town that has started to become genuinely nice, with a well-liked cycle path around the water in the centre, even though the town centre can be confusing to find your way around. As an adult newcomer you may have to work to get in socially. Around twenty restaurants, a few cafes, a cinema at Saga Folkets Hus, a couple of theatre stages and a bar or two. Shopping can be done locally with several grocery shops and a couple of clothes shops, and for most needs that is enough. The town has an unusual collection of museums shaped by its military history, from the defence and armour museum to the old Rödberg Fort. Around it there are swimming halls, sports halls and the Hive Arena for hockey, and in the forests outside lie several campsites and the internationally known Treehotel and Arctic Bath. Harads, Gunnarsbyn and the smaller places in the surrounding area have the essentials, but for a wider range you have to go into Boden's urban area, and Luleå and Kallax airport are half an hour away for everything else."},{"type":"p","text":"What runs through almost every conversation about Boden's future is H2 Green Steel. The planned steel plant is the town's great hope, with a factory measured in kilometres and recruitment on a large scale. Thousands of new jobs, a large need for inward migration and substantial challenges around housing all come with the investment, and the tax rate may have to rise to finance the growth."},{"type":"p","text":"The statistics partly back up the optimism. Unemployment is among the lowest in the country, and employment among young adults in their twenties is among the highest in the whole country, which fits the picture of an industrial and defence town where there is work for anyone who wants it. Median income is clearly above the national municipal median, and the share of households with low economic standard is clearly below the national average. The share with post-secondary education is also clearly above average. Within the municipality the range is wide, from Boden Central at the bottom up to the detached-house area of Sävast at the top, and in Lundagård and Sveafältet a quarter of households have low economic standard against just a few per cent in the more well-off areas."},{"type":"p","text":"Safety is presented matter-of-factly. Boden has no areas on the police's list of vulnerable areas, and crime per inhabitant is below the national level, though in the upper-middle bracket among municipalities. It takes just a single shooting for a town this small to stand out in the per-capita statistics, and otherwise people feel safe in the evening."},{"type":"p","text":"Boden suits anyone who wants proper winters, cold but with little wind, housing that is cheap compared with the big city, closeness to nature and a calm everyday life, and who is not bothered that nightlife and amenities are thin and that a car is in practice needed as a family with children. Anyone looking for city buzz, a broad cultural scene or an easy way to quickly become one of the gang should think twice.
