Det är mysigt och tryggt, men det är inte mycket som pågår, säger många som vuxit upp här, med olika tonläge. Nattliv och klubbar är det tunt med, mest ett par barer. Desto mer av idrottsevenemang året runt, festivaler som stadsfestivalen Piteå dansar och ler, en biograf, fiske, skoter och skidåkning. Sommaren är höjdpunkten. Pite Havsbad vid kusten med konserter och äventyrsbad drar folk, och staden blir riktigt levande i juli. Två praktiska saker hör till. Den ena är pappersbruket, vars närhet tidvis ger en doft i luften som man får vänja sig vid. Den andra är kommunikationerna. Piteå är en av landets större orter utan persontåg, så tåg nås via buss till Älvsbyn, Boden eller Luleå, och närmaste flyg är Luleå Airport. Lokalbussar finns men går glest, särskilt helger, så de flesta som flyttar hit behöver bil. Runt omkring breder skärgården och naturreservaten ut sig, och campingplatserna längs kusten är många. It is an industrial and coastal town of just over 42,000 inhabitants, and life here resembles everyday life in any mid-sized Swedish town, only with a longer way to the big city and a winter that takes up space. A slow pace, a bit of chat with the neighbours around town in summer, and considerably less stress than further south is what characterises the place."},{"type":"p","text":"Among Norrbotten's coastal towns, Piteå is often held up as the nicest and wealthiest of the neighbours. It is comparatively easy to get hold of housing, and people are seen as friendly and chatty. It's cosy and safe, but not much is going on, say many who grew up here, with varying degrees of emphasis. Nightlife and clubs are thin on the ground, mostly a couple of bars. There is far more in the way of sporting events all year round, festivals such as the town festival Piteå dansar och ler, a cinema, fishing, snowmobiling and skiing. Summer is the highlight. Pite Havsbad on the coast, with concerts and a water park, draws people in, and the town becomes truly lively in July. Two practical things belong here. One is the paper mill, whose proximity occasionally gives the air a smell you have to get used to. The other is transport links. Piteå is one of the country's larger towns without a passenger railway, so trains are reached by bus to Älvsbyn, Boden or Luleå, and the nearest airport is Luleå Airport. Local buses exist but run infrequently, especially at weekends, so most people who move here need a car. Around thirty restaurants, about ten cafes, Gallerian and Åhléns in the centre, several grocery shops and its own hospital. For anyone wanting to be active there is an unusually good number of swimming halls and pools, sports halls and ice rinks, and a handful of museums from the town's own to the boat museum. Around it the archipelago and nature reserves spread out, and there are many campsites along the coast. Öjebyn, with its old church town, and the smaller places in the surrounding area have the essentials, but for a wider range you have to go into Piteå's urban area."},{"type":"p","text":"Economically, Piteå stands out on the stable side. Median income is clearly above the national municipal median, the share with low economic standard is among the lowest in the country, and so is unemployment. Employment among young people in their twenties is clearly above the national average, which fits the picture of an industrial town where it is rarely hard to get a job in the right sector. In IT and as a developer, people are in demand across the whole of northern Sweden. The share with post-secondary education is just above the national average. There is a clear range between the sub-areas. Crime is clearly below the national level, and the municipality has no areas on the police's list of vulnerable areas. People do not avoid any places in the evening, although women do not always feel the same sense of safety.
