Flera matbutiker, ett par banker och apotek, två biografer i Juno Bio och Folkets Hus, ett par caféer och restauranger och en bar eller två. Här finns till och med Tornedalsteatern och badhus och gym. Men utanför Pajala tätort tar landsbygden snabbt över. Tärendö, Junosuando, Korpilombolo och Kangos är mindre byar med oftast en matbutik, en kyrka och det allra nödvändigaste, och för utbudet får man åka in. Here it is people rather than jobs that are in short supply. Unemployment is among the very lowest in the whole country, barely two per cent, and there is work outside industry too. The catch is housing. Even though there is hardly a shortage of land, it is hard to get hold of somewhere to live, and that slows inflow of new residents. That the municipality and the region struggle to recruit for healthcare and schools is a recurring problem, and public-sector pay is low. The wilderness and the sense of Lapland still feel partly undiscovered, and that shows in how the area lives off visitors for part of the year. There are a handful of hotels and lodges and several campsites along the rivers, and housing is cheap. Most everyday needs are gathered in the main town. Several grocery shops, a couple of banks and pharmacies, two cinemas in Juno Bio and Folkets Hus, a couple of cafes and restaurants and a bar or two. There is even the Tornedalen theatre and a swimming hall and gym. But outside Pajala's urban area the countryside quickly takes over. Tärendö, Junosuando, Korpilombolo and Kangos are smaller villages usually with a grocery shop, a church and the bare essentials, and for a wider range you have to drive in. Median income is clearly below the national municipal median, and the share with longer post-secondary education is among the lower in the country. But employment among young adults in their twenties is among the very highest in the country, because the mining and industrial jobs take people on early. The share with low economic standard sits in the middle of the national average. The difference within the municipality is noticeable. In the main town median income is higher and the education level better than out in the surrounding area, where both income and economic standard are lower."},{"type":"p","text":"Safety is one of the municipality's quieter strengths.
