Bil blir främst praktiskt för att nå kusten och större orter som Haparanda och Luleå. För sin storlek har orten förvånansvärt mycket att röra sig till. Det finns simhall och flera sporthallar, gym, badhus och ett par biografer i Folkets Hus och gamla Röda Kvarn. Runt omkring breder naturen ut sig med polcirkeln tvärs genom kommunen, en camping och vandrarhem och lodger för den som vill ut. Fewer than 4,000 people live in the municipality, and the main town effectively shares its everyday life with Finnish Ylitornio on the other side of the river. This is the sparse, remote Norrland people move to in order to switch off, not to be close to something. The border exists mostly in theory. Everything is within walking distance, and most everyday needs are covered: a handful of grocery shops, a couple of banks, a pharmacy, a library and a health centre. The real challenge is rather getting here. A car becomes mainly useful for reaching the coast and larger towns such as Haparanda and Luleå. For its size, the town has a surprising amount to do. There is an indoor pool and several sports halls, a gym, a swimming hall and a couple of cinemas in Folkets Hus and the old Röda Kvarn. All around, nature spreads out with the Arctic Circle running straight through the municipality, a campsite and a hostel and lodges for anyone wanting to get out into it. There are a few restaurants and cafes, but this is not a place you move to for the nightlife."},{"type":"p","text":"Economically this is on paper one of the country's poorer municipalities. Median income of around SEK 299,000 is among the very lowest in Sweden, well below the national municipal median. Between the municipality's three sub-areas the range is nonetheless moderate. The share with low economic standard is just above the national average, and the education level is around the national middle. One measure stands out in the other direction. Employment among young people in their twenties is among the highest in the country, because in such a small labour market the young people who stay tend to gain a foothold more often.
