Lugnet, älven, fisket och priset är det som lockar. Invändningen är att det stora problemet kvarstår. Vad ska man jobba med? Just over 3,180 residents (2025) live here, in a municipality that has seen its population shrink over six decades. This is not northern Norrbotten in any dramatic mountain sense, but a relatively flat interior where most things, jobs, community life and services, still happen down on the coast."},{"type":"p","text":"Two things define the town. The first is the cheap housing. Överkalix has at times had an actual surplus of housing while large parts of the country have had a shortage, and you can get a detached house for a fraction of what an equivalent house costs in a mid-sized city further south. The second is the foreign house buyers. The municipality is the most over-represented in the country for French residents, still only around thirty people but enough to puzzle, and a family that settles in well tends to draw more from the same area. The quiet, the river, the fishing and the price are what attract people. The objection is that the big problem remains. What will you work with? Remote work makes it possible for some, but locally the job market is narrow, and there is no upper secondary school in the town, which makes families with children hesitant even when the job can be done from home."},{"type":"p","text":"The range of amenities is small. A few restaurants and a couple of cafés, a swimming pool, the library and a small cinema, and shops for the essentials. Among the sights are a tractor museum and Lillberget's ancient village, and around the town are the river, fishing and a couple of campsites. Median income of just over SEK 300,000 (2024) is among the very lowest in the country, clearly below the national municipal median, and the share with longer education is clearly below average. The spread within the municipality goes an unusual way. The surrounding countryside has a higher median income, around SEK 315,000, than the urban area itself, around 283,000. The share with a low economic standard, fourteen per cent, is around the national level. At the same time, one figure stands out in the other direction. Employment among people in their twenties is among the highest in the whole country (2024). In a small job market, the threshold into work is low for those who choose to stay, and unemployment is around the national average."},{"type":"p","text":"Safety is not an issue. Reported crimes are clearly below the national level (2025), and the municipality has no areas on the police's list of vulnerable areas. What defines the town instead is demographics. Among the young there is a noticeable excess of unmarried men, and anyone wanting to socialise often heads to Luleå on payday weekends.
