A regional hub for the interior of southern Lapland with just over 12,000 residents (2025), surrounded by forest and long distances. To Umeå it is a good 120 kilometres, to the coast even further, and that distance is often the first thing outsiders notice. Lycksele can stand in for the interior of Norrland as a whole: what it is like to live where services thin out and a car is compulsory."},{"type":"p","text":"The picture of the town is two-sided. The nature is beautiful and daily life is functional. The 30 kilometres to school that sound off-putting further south are, in practice, twenty or thirty minutes on empty roads. At the same time there is an outspoken worry about decline. When the maternity ward in Lycksele closed it became a symbol of the question of whether the interior is doomed to lose people outside the towns, and doubts about jobs keep resurfacing. Anyone who does not already have a job to move to will not find a clear sense of growth to lean on. Lycksele also reliably turns up on lists of Sweden's most boring towns, and anyone who moves here without their own network may find it lonely. For qualified teachers and healthcare staff, though, it is the opposite. There, it is almost a case of taking your pick."},{"type":"p","text":"What is actually there is in the town itself. Around ten restaurants and a handful of cafés, a swimming hall and bathing park, the library and a couple of bookshops, and shops for most of what you need day to day. The biggest draw is Lycksele Zoo, with muskox, European bison, reindeer and other Nordic wildlife, one of few in this part of the country. Around the town are lakes, nature reserves and several campsites, Ansia among them. Smaller places like Örträsk and Rusksele have the essentials, often a grocery shop, but for real variety you need to go into Lycksele. If you live in the countryside a car is a must, and distances become part of everyday life."},{"type":"p","text":"The statistics are more balanced than the town's reputation suggests. Median income of just under SEK 340,000 (2024) sits almost exactly at the national municipal median, and the share with a low economic standard, fourteen per cent, is identical to the national level. Unemployment is actually clearly below the national average. The worry, then, is less about today's figures than about the direction of travel. Within the municipality the differences are clear. In Norrmalm with Solsidan, median income is around SEK 385,000 and only six per cent have a low economic standard, while the town centre area lands around 288,000 with twenty-three per cent. Here the education level also drops correspondingly, so this is a matter of real economic weight, not students skewing the numbers. Employment among young adults is among the highest in the country, which suggests that anyone wanting to enter the job market early can do so."},{"type":"p","text":"Safety is not a cause for concern. The number of reported crimes per resident is below the national level (2025), and the municipality has no areas on the police's list of vulnerable areas."},{"type":"p","text":"Lycksele suits those who want the forest, hunting and berry-picking grounds on the doorstep, can handle a car and winter, and do not depend on a big city's amenities. Those looking for commuting distance to a larger job market, a broad entertainment scene or a sense that the town is growing rather than shrinking should think twice. Those are precisely the things the interior itself most often lacks."}],"kallor_en":"Draft.
