Two higher education institutions, a large university hospital and a cultural scene that punches above its weight. With just over 135,000 residents (2025), the city is large enough to have a genuine urban feel but small enough that you can cycle straight across it in a quarter of an hour. People tend to call it lagom, the Swedish word for just the right amount, a city where nature is close even from the centre."},{"type":"h2","text":"Winter, darkness and cycling"},{"type":"p","text":"Nothing shapes life here like the climate. Dark for roughly half the year, long cold winters, plenty of snow and a sun that in the depths of winter sets around two in the afternoon. If you move here you need to prefer winter, darkness and cold to sun and warmth, otherwise you will not last. Those who love the city turn it around: proper winter with dry snow instead of slush, and long bright summer days that make it feel like a completely different city. The northern lights now and then, when the clouds and the city's lights allow it."},{"type":"p","text":"Everyday life revolves around the bicycle. You get everywhere on ploughed cycle paths, many pedal year round with studded tyres or a fat bike, others swap the bike for cross-country skis in winter. The exercise culture is strong, not least around IKSU, and nature is close by. Nydala to jog around, forest a quarter of an hour away. The downside is that the terrain is flat. Anyone wanting mountains and drama finds the landscape dull, and it takes four or five hours by car to reach the mountains."},{"type":"h2","text":"The city's amenities"},{"type":"p","text":"For its size, Umeå is well served. Just over a hundred restaurants and up to fifty cafés, three cinemas, several bookshops and everything you need in the way of shops, department stores and shopping centres. The cultural scene is unusually strong for a city of this size: Norrlandsoperan, a handful of theatre stages and close to twenty museums, among them the Västerbotten Museum. If you want to keep active there are around twenty gyms, plenty of sports halls and several swimming pools, Navet and Aquarena among them. Around the city are lakes, nature reserves and a string of campsites. Nightlife, on the other hand, is thin. There are pleasant pubs and a couple of nightclubs, but early in the week much is closed, and for big concerts and festivals you often have to travel south."},{"type":"h2","text":"Economy and sub-areas"},{"type":"p","text":"Umeå is a well-educated city with a distinct student character. The median income of just under SEK 360,000 (2024) is clearly above the national average, and the share with post-secondary education is among the very highest in the country. Unemployment is clearly below the national level. At the same time, the students pull several key figures down. Employment among those in their twenties is among the lowest in the country, but that reflects that young people here are studying rather than working, not exclusion. The same pattern shows up between the sub-areas. Student-dense Ålidhem and the university and hospital area have the city's lowest median incomes, around 120,000 to 145,000, while detached-house areas such as Tomtebo östra, Ersmark and Täfteå reach upwards of half a million. Economic vulnerability as a whole is around or just below the national average."},{"type":"p","text":"What weighs the city down is housing and wages. Finding accommodation, especially a rental flat, is difficult, and prices feel high relative to wages, which are lower than further south, not least for engineers. It gets cheaper in the towns around Umeå. Vännäs, Vindeln, Hörnefors, Holmsund and Sävar, from where you can commute in by train in under an hour. The job market is two-sided. Many students create tough competition for positions, and some are forced to move after graduating, while at the same time the region is growing and the IT industry is highlighted as a bright spot."},{"type":"p","text":"Safety is a point of pride. Umeå is often described as the largest Swedish city entirely without an area on the police's list of vulnerable areas, and many feel safe in the centre even in the middle of the night. The statistics point the same way, with reported crimes (2025) below the national average. Socially, opinions differ. People are friendly but a little reserved, and it can take time to find your way in, while at the same time the large share of newcomers and students makes it easier to find your circle."},{"type":"p","text":"Umeå suits those who want the city's amenities, closeness to nature and a safe daily life, and who genuinely enjoy cold, darkness and snow.
