Medianinkomsten är bland de lägsta i landet, klart under rikets kommunmedian, och andelen invånare med låg ekonomisk standard ligger klart över rikssnittet. Samtidigt sticker en siffra ut åt andra hållet: sysselsättningen bland unga i tjugoårsåldern är bland landets allra högsta, för i en så liten arbetsmarknad blir få utan jobb snabbt synligt i statistiken. That shapes everything. Here, everyday life is about long distances, sparse services and a community where most people know each other, for better and worse."},{"type":"p","text":"For most of the year the town is quiet, especially in winter. The streets empty of people quickly in the evenings and a silence settles in. The exception is the four days in February when the Åsele market transforms the town, one of Norrland's big markets that draws visitors in large numbers and gives the municipality energy that lasts a long while. For the rest of the year you live with the hibernation. Young people driving around and skidding their cars on winter evenings is part of the picture, both as a feature and as a sign that not much else is going on. Day to day, the essentials are available in the main town: a couple of grocery shops, a bank, a pharmacy and the state-run off-licence Systembolaget, a library, a gym and a cultural centre. Eating out is actually possible, a handful of pizzerias and an inn stay open. Nature is the big draw, with a large number of nature reserves and outdoor recreation areas around the town and several viewpoints, plus a handful of campsites and even a motor stadium. Anyone living in a village like Fredrika has only the most basic essentials and has to travel in for the rest."},{"type":"p","text":"Economically, Åsele is among the weaker municipalities. Median income is among the lowest in the country, clearly below the national municipal median, and the share of residents with a low economic standard is clearly above the national average. The share with longer post-secondary education is clearly below average. At the same time, one figure stands out in the other direction: employment among people in their twenties is among the highest in the country, because in such a small job market, few people being out of work quickly shows up in the statistics.
