Det är en trygg och liten ort där det mesta man behöver finns på plats: bra förskola och skola, och förvånansvärt mycket fritid för barn. Flera sporthallar, ishall, padel och idrottsplatser ligger i kommunen, och Vännäsby har eget badhus och bibliotek. Till vardags finns ett par matbutiker, bank, apotek och systembolag, ett par bibliotek och ett tiotal caféer och restauranger, mest pizza och thai men fullt tillräckligt för att slippa åka in för en middag. Much of life here does not revolve around the town itself but around Umeå, twenty-five minutes away. That is roughly how daily life looks for many: you live more cheaply and closer to nature and let the big city stay a train window away. Vännäs half-jokingly calls itself the Venice of Norrland, which says something about its self-image, small, self-deprecating, but not discontented."},{"type":"p","text":"The commuting position is what matters most. This is the place you move to when you want a bigger house than Umeå prices allow but still want to reach the city's jobs, healthcare and amenities in under an hour. By car or train it takes around half an hour in without queues, and trains and buses run frequently. If you live out in the villages you will still want a car, not least in winter. It is a safe, small town where most of what you need is close at hand: good preschools and schools, and a surprising amount of leisure activities for children. Several sports halls, an ice rink, padel and sports grounds are located in the municipality, and Vännäsby has its own swimming pool and library. Day to day there are a couple of grocery shops, a bank, a pharmacy and the state-run off-licence Systembolaget, a couple of libraries and around ten cafés and restaurants, mostly pizza and Thai but plenty to avoid a trip into town for dinner. The range of amenities is concentrated in Vännäs and Vännäsby. Further out in the villages, the countryside takes over."},{"type":"p","text":"The statistics support this positive picture. Median income is clearly above the national municipal median, the share with a low economic standard clearly below it, and the share with post-secondary education clearly above average. Unemployment is among the lowest in the country. There is a clear difference between the two sub-areas: in Vännäsby incomes are higher and few struggle financially, while the main town of Vännäs is lower on both counts, and the education level follows the same pattern, so it is a real difference between the villages and not a statistical illusion. That people in their twenties are employed at roughly the same rate as in the country as a whole suggests, at the same time, that the youngest often head to Umeå for studies and jobs."},{"type":"p","text":"Safety is an advantage worth mentioning.
