Tryggheten ser god ut i siffrorna. The main town is a hub. Here the E12, the Blue Highway, and the inland route E45 cross, and the Inland Railway passes through. But from there it is far to everything. To Umeå and the coast, distances are measured in hours, not minutes. The municipality also contains the mountain resorts of Tärnaby and Hemavan, and that means everyday life looks completely different depending on whether you live in the main town, in a village along the road, or up in the mountains."},{"type":"h2","text":"Two municipalities in one"},{"type":"p","text":"It is worth distinguishing between Storuman and the mountains, since the range of services follows the tourism. The main town has the everyday things: a couple of grocery shops, a bank, a pharmacy and a branch of the state-run off-licence Systembolaget, a swimming pool, a couple of libraries, a cinema in the community hall and several sports halls. There are around ten restaurants if you count the whole municipality, and a good number of them are up in Tärnaby and Hemavan along with around ten hotels, the ski systems and a multitude of campsites. Nature is of course the big draw: an alpine botanical garden, the Vindelfjällen visitor centre and about twenty nature reserves and outdoor recreation areas. If you live in the town of Storuman you have more services close by. If you live in a village such as Gunnarn or Slussfors, you have the essentials, often a grocery shop, but for the rest you have to drive."},{"type":"h2","text":"Jobs, economy and winter"},{"type":"p","text":"Economically, Storuman lies below the national average. The median income is among the lower in the country, and few have a longer post-secondary education. At the same time, unemployment is among the very lowest in the country and employment among young adults in their twenties is among the highest in the country. In a sparsely populated area, those who want to work often start early, not least within tourism, hydropower and forestry. The share with low economic standard is around the national average. Between the sub-areas there is a clear difference, from Luspen at the bottom, which also has the municipality's highest share with tight finances, up to Vallnäs."},{"type":"p","text":"The winters are harsh and dark, minus twenty-four degrees is nothing unusual, and without a driving licence and a large network of contacts, even simple errands become a project when you live this far up. What makes up for it is the view of the mountains and nature right outside the door. Safety looks good in the figures. Reported crime is below the national level, and the municipality has no areas on the police's list of vulnerable areas."},{"type":"p","text":"Storuman suits those who want mountains, forest and silence right outside the door, a short way to work and a small-scale community, and who are not put off by long distances, harsh winters and a limited range of everyday services. Anyone who needs big-city services, a broad housing or job market, or short travel times should think twice."}],"kallor_en":"Draft.
