Malå is old mining and geology country, and it shows: the Geological Survey of Sweden is based here, along with a geology museum and a couple of other museums. Day to day there are a couple of grocery shops, a bank and a pharmacy, a handful of hairdressers and cafés, a branch of the state-run off-licence Systembolaget and a hardware store. The restaurant scene is thin, in practice a steakhouse plus a couple of fast-food places, so anyone who wants to eat out often has to expect a limited menu. There is, however, more to do than the size suggests: a couple of cinemas, a theatre stage, several sports halls and a ski facility at Tjamstan, plus a couple of campsites. Employment among young adults in their twenties is among the highest in the country, and unemployment among the lowest. Here young people go into work rather than on to further study, which also shows in how few have a longer post-secondary education.
