There is a swimming pool, a couple of sports halls and a sports ground, a cinema and a library, and a couple of museums such as the ski museum and the wilderness centre in Svansele. Around it, nature quickly takes over: a string of nature reserves, a couple of campsites and fishing waters right outside the door. The range of services sits in the main town. The smaller settlements such as Bastuträsk and Kusfors have the essentials, often a grocery shop and a school, but for anything else you have to drive in. Unemployment is among the very lowest in the country, and almost all young adults in their twenties are in employment, one of the highest figures in Sweden. People here go into work early and steadily. The downside is that wages are low. The median income is clearly below the national municipal median, and few have a longer higher education. It is a place where people work, but rarely in the highest-paid occupations.
