Mönstret går igen i många inlandskommuner. The title has long swung between Bjurholm and Dorotea. Just under 2,330 people live here, most of them in the municipality's only urban area, and around it a hilly landscape of forest and river spreads out around the Öre River. Umeå is a good 60 km away, just under an hour's drive east along national road 92. Everyday life is about space, quiet and long distances rather than a wide range of services."},{"type":"p","text":"It says something that so little is written about what it is like to live here. When Bjurholm comes up, it is almost always as a trivia fact about its size, and the few with a local connection usually land on the same short verdict: beautiful nature, and not much more. The range of services confirms the picture. The urban area has grocery shops, a branch of the state-run off-licence Systembolaget, a couple of gyms and a swimming pool, but only a couple of restaurants and no café or cinema worth the name. What still leaves a mark is concrete. Älgens hus (the Moose House) with its tame moose, the Nyåker gingerbread biscuits made in the municipality, and an unusually centre-right voting tradition for lying this far north. The population has shrunk since the 1970s, when nearly 4,000 lived here, even though the urban area itself has held steady at around a thousand inhabitants for half a century."},{"type":"p","text":"Economically, Bjurholm is among the country's weaker municipalities. The median income of SEK 301,900 is among the lowest in the country, well below the national municipal median of just over SEK 338,000, and the share with low economic standard at 18 per cent is clearly above the national average. The share with post-secondary education is clearly below the national figure. At the same time, unemployment is low, just over 3.5 per cent and clearly below the national average, while employment among young adults is around the average. The pattern recurs in many inland municipalities. The jobs exist, but they are few and wages are low. The municipality is also so small that it forms a single statistical sub-area, so there are no internal income differences to lean on."},{"type":"p","text":"Safety speaks in Bjurholm's favour. The number of reported crimes per inhabitant is below the national level, and the municipality has no areas on the police's situation report on vulnerable areas."},{"type":"p","text":"Bjurholm suits those who want forest, river and stillness right outside the door, cheap housing and an everyday life where you recognise people, and who are not bothered by the long distance to hospital, a broader job market and the range of a big city. Anyone looking for high wages and short distances should think twice."}],"kallor_en":"Draft.
