This is not a place you pass through by chance. You live here for the closeness to nature, because you grew up in the area, or because you commute in towards Umeå. Everyday life is low-key, and so is the range of services. The main town has the essentials, grocery shops, a pharmacy, a branch of the state-run off-licence Systembolaget, a swimming pool and a gym, but only a handful of restaurants and cafés, and no cinema. For entertainment and a broader range of services, life happens near Umeå rather than in Nordmaling itself. What still gives the area its character is the nature and the industrial history, from the Olofsfors ironworks and its museum to the nature reserves and the Tallberg bridges."},{"type":"p","text":"When a two-year-old boy went missing in a village in spring 2026, almost the whole area joined the search. Police, mountain rescue, the Home Guard and volunteers went out, drove every small forest road and listened for crying until the boy was found alive. It says something about a place where people still show up for each other. The downside of the sparse population is more mundane. The local taxi closed down a few years ago, ride-sharing services barely operate up here outside the larger towns, and without a car you effectively have to ask acquaintances for a lift. The median income of SEK 329,000 is clearly below the country's municipal median, and the share with post-secondary education is somewhat below average. At the same time, unemployment is low, clearly below the national average, and unusually few young people are out of work. In Nordmaling's centre the median income is lowest, around SEK 304,000, and the share with low economic standard highest, while Rundvik, Lögdeå and Levaråkern are higher.
