The train to Stockholm takes around an hour and a half, Uppsala and Arlanda are even closer, and Dalarna, Sundsvall or the coast can be reached within a day. Around a hundred restaurants, around thirty cafés, two cinemas, a department store and a shopping centre right in the centre, IKEA and the furniture stores out in Valbo. For anyone wanting to be active there are several ice rinks, around thirty sports halls, swimming baths and the Hemlingby outdoor recreation area with a ski slope and trails. The cultural offer is unusually broad for the size of the place: around ten museums led by the Swedish Railway Museum and the county museum, several theatre stages, a new culture house with a library and art gallery. Just to the south lies Furuvik. This is not a place you need to leave for a coffee, a dinner or a trip to the cinema."},{"type":"p","text":"The city centre stirs mixed feelings. Many ugly buildings around the square, but also beautiful blocks. The most dully talked-about thing is the nightlife. The pubs and bars have thinned out, and the weekly rhythm is dead Monday to Thursday and only comes alive on Friday and Saturday. Two other things come up again and again. One is that the people of Gävle are hard to get close to, where it can almost feel odd to say hello to someone you have not known since childhood. The other is Chernobyl, where the caesium fallout of 1986 hit the area hard and still comes up, often as dark humour. At the same time, unemployment is among the highest in the country (2024) and the share with low economic standard is somewhat above the national figure, a reminder that deindustrialisation is real.
