Men utbildningsnivån sticker ut. Just under 9,200 inhabitants (2025) live in a municipality passed through by the E16 between Gävle and Falun, and that sense of being a place you drive through shapes much of the outside image. A petrol station, a steelworks and forest all around. Hofors is almost a standing joke, the town you drive through, the backwater, the small municipality everyone seems to have an opinion about without really knowing why. The tone is harsh, but often affectionate, and many of the sharpest lines come from people who grew up there themselves."},{"type":"p","text":"Behind the jokes there is a fairly clear self image. Those who have lived in Hofors keep coming back to two things. One is the dependence on industry. The steelworks is the town's reason for being, the employer that occupies a large share of the municipality and that everything else revolves around. The other is that there is actually more than you would think for anyone who likes to be active. Sport and outdoor life are what set the town apart. A golf course, a ski slope, an ice rink and sports halls are all here, and on the first weekend of July an appreciated bluegrass festival is held in Torsåker, drawing both local and international musicians. At the same time an undertone of depopulation runs through the picture. The population has fallen sharply since the heyday of industry, and some who have moved away talk about Hofors in the past tense."},{"type":"p","text":"The everyday range of amenities is limited but functioning. The urban area of Hofors has a library, a branch of the state-run off-licence Systembolaget, a handful of food shops and a bunch of cafés and pizzerias, plus a few restaurants for anyone who wants to eat out. Everyday needs can be managed, but for the wider range you have to go to Gävle or Falun. The range of amenities is also concentrated. The urban area of Hofors gathers most of it, while Torsåker to the east has the basics and part of the outdoor life. If you live outside the two places, a car is a must."},{"type":"p","text":"Statistics give a sober picture rather than a bleak one. Median income of SEK 337,000 (2024) is just below the national municipal median, in other words right in the middle of the Swedish field. But the education level stands out. The share with longer post secondary education is among the lowest in the country, which is typical of an industrial town where the jobs have long existed without the need for higher education. Unemployment of just over 6 per cent (2024) is clearly above the national average, and the share with low economic standard, 15 per cent (2024), is somewhat higher than nationally. Between the municipality's two sub areas there is a noticeable difference. In the urban area of Hofors, median income is lower and the share with weak finances higher than in the eastern countryside, where incomes and education level are both a notch higher."},{"type":"p","text":"Safety is a bright spot that rarely comes through in the jokes. The number of reported crimes per inhabitant is clearly below the national level, 8,719 against 11,911 per 100,000 inhabitants (2025), and the municipality has no police-designated vulnerable areas. It is, in short, a calm place."},{"type":"p","text":"Hofors suits those who want to live cheaply, close to nature and close to an active outdoor life, and who do not depend on the amenities of a big city. The municipality markets itself as the place where you live cheaply and live richly, and for the right person that holds true. Those looking for a broad labour market, a university environment or a growing local community should think twice, however. Hofors is a town that has held together around its ironworks, but has for a long time seen more people leave than arrive."}],"kallor_en":"Draft.
