Både polis och Arbetsförmedling har lämnat orten, gymnasieskolorna är få, och polisen kan ta över en timme på sig att komma. En del kopplar det till en större glesbygdsfråga, att centraliseringen slår hårdast mot de halvstora orterna och att den som blir kvar får mindre samhälle för en hög skattesats. Samtidigt finns en tydlig mothållning från folk som känner trakten väl. Den mest spridda krimskildringen, om ett hus där kriminella tagit över, handlade egentligen om Långshyttan ett par mil utanför staden och om brott som till stor del låg tio år tillbaka. Att det är ont om polis stämmer. Hedemora är en förvånansvärt komplett liten stad. En handfull restauranger, lika många caféer, en biograf och ett tiotal matbutiker täcker det dagliga, och två gallerior mitt i stan håller ihop handeln. Vill man röra på sig finns gym, flera sporthallar, simhall och isbana. Runt omkring ligger sjöar och en rad campingplatser, och historien sitter kvar i väggarna med ett tiotal små museer, från bruksmuseum och Polhemsmuseet till ett MC-museum. Nästan allt utbud ligger i Hedemora stad. The recurring image is of a town that could have been pleasant if it did not have a concrete silo stuck in the middle of it, the same mockery that hits several Dalarna towns. More serious is the story of a community the authorities have withdrawn from. Both the police and the Swedish Public Employment Service have left the town, upper secondary schools are few, and the police can take over an hour to arrive. Some link it to a wider rural issue, that centralisation hits the medium sized towns hardest and that those who remain get less community for a high tax rate. At the same time there is a clear pushback from people who know the area well. The most widely shared crime story, about a house taken over by criminals, was in fact about Långshyttan a couple of dozen kilometres outside the town and about offences that largely dated back ten years. That police are in short supply is true. But it does not make the dramatic image of a town in criminal grip true."},{"type":"h2","text":"More of a town than the reputation suggests"},{"type":"p","text":"For those who actually live here, the everyday range of amenities is better than the outside image. Hedemora is a surprisingly complete little town. A handful of restaurants, about as many cafés, a cinema and around ten food shops cover everyday needs, and two shopping centres in the middle of town hold retail together. If you want to be active there are gyms, several sports halls, a swimming hall and an ice rink. Round about lie lakes and a number of campsites, and history is present in the walls with around ten small museums, from the ironworks museum and the Polhem Museum to a motorcycle museum. This is not a place where you have to go elsewhere for a coffee, a dinner or a film."},{"type":"p","text":"But town and countryside are two different things, and it is worth knowing before choosing an address. Almost the entire range of amenities lies in the town of Hedemora. The places around it, Långshyttan, Vikmanshyttan, Garpenberg and Husby, have the essentials, often a food shop, a church and a school, but for the rest you have to travel in.
