Red cottages, lake, forest and folk costumes. The municipality has just over 16,000 residents and is small enough to feel like a district rather than a town, but it is hardly anonymous. Two things tie the district together more than anything else: midsummer and ice hockey."},{"type":"p","text":"The midsummer celebration at Sammilsdal, known as \"Gropen\", is one of the country's largest and best known, with thousands of visitors making the pilgrimage for the raising of the maypole, even from abroad. But the picture is not unreservedly bright. It gets crowded, loud and there are plenty of drunk teenagers, and many local residents themselves head out to surrounding villages such as Tibble or Tällberg to escape the crush. That in itself says something about a place used to being a destination. The other hub is Leksands IF. The ice hockey is a marker of identity that runs deep even among those who have moved away, and Tegera Arena is one of the town's obvious landmarks."},{"type":"h2","text":"More to do than the size suggests"},{"type":"p","text":"For a municipality of this size the range of amenities is unusually rich, and much of it is connected to Leksand having long been a destination. Here there are around twenty restaurants, plenty of cafés and patisseries, a cinema, a cultural centre with a library and a long list of sights. The manor house Hildasholm, a Japanese garden, the Naturum Dalarna nature centre by Lake Siljan and several local heritage and artists' farms are among those that give the district life. Tällberg up by the lake is known for its views and old hotels. Insjön is where the roots of Clas Ohlson lie, with both a shop and a small museum. Around Lake Siljan there are campsites, bathing spots and viewpoints on hills in every direction, and the crispbread from the town is a byword in itself. Most of the amenities are found in Leksand and Insjön. Outside them the district and the nature take over."},{"type":"h2","text":"Economy and safety"},{"type":"p","text":"Economically the municipality sits roughly around the national average. The median income of SEK 329,600 is somewhat below the national municipality median, but the share with low economic standard, 11 per cent, is clearly below the national level, and unemployment is among the lowest in the country. The share with post-secondary education is clearly above the national average. Behind the average there are clear differences between sub-areas, from around SEK 293,000 in median income in Noret-Ullvi-Rönnäs to just over SEK 363,000 in Käringberget. Insjön-Tunsta stands out with both the lowest level of education and the largest share with weak finances, a more industrial-heritage corner. The range of jobs is at the same time limited, and Leksand is often weighed against Falun and Borlänge for those who want to change jobs without moving. Remote work is what makes the move possible for many whose profession is not available in the town."},{"type":"p","text":"Safety appears good. The number of reported crimes is among the lowest in the country, and the municipality has no areas in the police's situation report on police-designated vulnerable areas. The times something serious has actually happened, the reaction has precisely been that people never felt unsafe here, which says something about how unusual it is perceived to be."},{"type":"p","text":"Leksand suits those who want lake, nature and a strong local community within reach, and who do not need the amenities or job market of a big city. Those who are looking for breadth in jobs, nightlife or housing options should think twice, and expect that midsummer week belongs to the visitors just as much as to the people of Leksand."}],"kallor_en":"Draft.
