The town grew up around Surahammar's ironworks, and Sweden's first car was built here at the end of the 19th century, commissioned by the works, something people are still proud of. The range of services is limited. There are a couple of grocery shops, a branch of the state-run off-licence Systembolaget, a library and a handful of places to eat and cafés, but you should not count on any evening life within walking distance. Outside the summer season, when the campsite's bathing spot is at its liveliest, it becomes noticeably quieter, and anyone wanting more takes the train or the car into Västerås. Anyone who instead wants calm, closeness to nature and cheaper housing can see exactly the same thing as an advantage. Around the town there are some twenty parks and nature areas, including the Ramnässkogen nature reserve and the ironworks' own parks, an ice rink and several sports pitches, and the industrial history remains in an old smithy turned museum. Virsbo and Ramnäs are smaller places with their own train station and the essentials, but for a broader range you need to go into the main town or further. The differences within the municipality are clear. Incomes are lowest in Dalskogen, Virsbo and Ramnäs and highest in Stavtorpet and Bruket. What stands out most is the education level: the share with a longer higher education is among the lowest in the country, which is typical of a mill town where jobs have long existed without requiring higher education. Otherwise, Surahammar sits right in the middle of the Swedish field.
