The main town is an old town with a history, its merchants were granted town privileges as early as the 1640s, but otherwise this is distinctly small-scale, rural Sweden. People live in the town itself, in a surrounding area that spreads out to the north, south and east, and in the urban area of Åsbro. What everyday life feels like is hard to tell from a distance, since Askersund is almost never discussed in the context of moving somewhere. The times the municipality does appear, it is rather in national news stories that happen to take place here, such as a viral row over a moped conversion car on an approach road.
