Formellt hör kommunen till Örebro län, men landskapsgränsen mellan Närke och Värmland går rakt genom orten, och den som bott här klargör gärna att man är värmlänning, inte närking. Det här är en klassisk bruksort. Namnet kommer av forsen där en stångjärnshammare anlades redan på 1660-talet, och järn- och stålverket satte prägel på samhället ända in på 2000-talet, då stålverket lades ned och hundratals jobb försvann. Formally the municipality belongs to Örebro county, but the boundary between the provinces of Närke and Värmland runs right through the town, and those who have lived here are quick to clarify that they are Värmlanders, not Närke people. This is a classic mill town. The name comes from the rapids where a wrought-iron hammer mill was established as early as the 1660s, and the iron and steelworks shaped the community right up into the 2000s, when the steelworks closed and hundreds of jobs disappeared. From the just over 12,000 inhabitants of the 1970s and 1980s, the population has shrunk to around 9,200."},{"type":"p","text":"Two things define the town in many people's eyes. One is football. Degerfors IF and the Stora Valla arena are more than a club, they are the town's entire identity, and the municipality's own slogan about being more than steel and football is read almost with a wink, since steel and football are precisely what most people associate the place with. Degerfors is considered one of Sweden's reddest municipalities, where the Left Party has long been the largest party and in 2010 even won its own majority. Some warn outright and call the town a gloomy backwater. Others push back and think it is really nice, with just the right amount of small-town vibe. It is true that the range of shops and services is small. There are a couple of grocery shops, a couple of cafés and a handful of pizzerias and restaurants, including Empoli and Torgkällaren, but food delivery apps are largely absent, and anyone wanting the range a city offers has to commute. Nature, however, is close by. The ice-age formations at Sveafallen, with their giant's kettles, sit right in the middle of the urban area and are a genuine attraction, and around it there is hiking, a couple of campsites and rail-bike cycling on the old railway embankment.
