Large parts of the island are carpeted with detached houses. The main town, Skoghall, has a different background as a mill town, with paper and cardboard manufacturing having shaped the area and still being a major employer. For many, everyday life revolves around precisely this closeness to Karlstad. Everyday life gets by well on the island itself. In Skoghall there are a couple of large grocery shops, a cinema in the Folkets Hus community centre, an ice rink, several gyms and around twenty restaurants and pizzerias. Around the edges lies the Vänern archipelago with nature reserves, swimming spots, a handful of small-boat harbours and camping at Mörudden. Median income of SEK 411,400 (2024) is among the highest in the country, the share with a low standard of living, 7 per cent, is about half the national average, and the education level is among the highest in the country, with around 40 per cent having at least three years of post-secondary education. But the spread between the sub-areas is large and real. In Tynäs-Bärstad-Hallersrud median income is around SEK 492,000, in Skoghall-Vidöåsen around SEK 304,000, and the same area has a clearly lower education level and a considerably higher share with weak finances. This is therefore a real socioeconomic difference within the island, not a statistical illusion. One exception to the otherwise strong picture is the youngest adults.
