The downside is that the shopping centres have drawn life and shops away from Charlottenberg's old town centre, which many remember as livelier in the past. At the same time they have created jobs that would not otherwise exist. There are around a dozen restaurants and a couple of cafés, and a surprising number of small museums tell the story of the area's history, including the Eda glass museum and the museums around Eda skans and the wartime preparedness years at the border.
