The location and the short distances to nature are one of the town's great assets, with Tiveden National Park, the island of Torsö and the walking trails along the canal within reach. In comparisons with neighbouring municipalities, Mariestad often comes out well. But there is a downside. It can be hard to get to know people, and you have to seek out the gym or the pool to make contact. The town has a few hidden gems, an unexpectedly good restaurant, a locally made ice cream, but is poor at advertising them."},{"type":"p","text":"In recent years much of the talk has centred on the Volvo group's planned battery factory, which has been promised to provide thousands of jobs. The tone is cautiously sceptical. Automation is likely to make the job figures smaller than they sound, and the factory will need more electricity than the whole of Mariestad currently uses. Some thirty restaurants, around fifteen cafés, a cinema, a theatre and several museums, a couple of which tell the history of the canal and local industry. If you want to be active there is a swimming pool, gyms and several sports halls. By the water there are about ten campsites and guest harbours, and ferries run out to the islands. Around the town spread some thirty nature reserves. Outside the main town, Sjötorp by the canal, Lyrestad, Ullervad and the island of Torsö have a life and the essentials of their own, but the centre of gravity lies in the town."},{"type":"h2","text":"A stable mill town"},{"type":"p","text":"The statistics paint a stable mill town rather than a place in decline. Median income is around the national average, the share with low economic standard clearly below the national municipal median, and unemployment below average.
