With just over 50,000 residents it is one of the Göteborg region's surrounding municipalities: close to the sea, close to the jobs in the city, with Bohus Fortress on a cliff in the middle of the town and the seaside resort of Marstrand with Carlsten Fortress out in the archipelago. For many, everyday life is less about Kungälv itself and more about its relationship to Göteborg."},{"type":"p","text":"This shows in how the municipality tends to be described. Pleasant and attractive, close to both the city and the water. But almost in the same breath comes the caveat about commuting. Ideally you do not want to live in Kungälv while working in Göteborg, since the traffic queues into the city can mean an hour behind the wheel, and the advice is often to take the direct bus or make sure you live near the train. There is a concern that the surrounding municipalities are drifting into becoming dormitory towns, good for living in and schooling children, with plenty of restaurants and tradespeople, but without especially many local jobs. Anyone living here in practice pays for the lower housing price with their daily commute."},{"type":"p","text":"Even so, the range on offer is good for the size of the town. Kungälv has around fifty restaurants and around twenty cafés, a cinema at Trappan Bio, shopping-centre retail at Kongahälla Center, its own hospital, gyms, swimming facilities and sports halls. Marstrand draws life and sailing in summer and has its own hotels, café and library. But much is concentrated in Kungälv and Ytterby, and further out, around Kode, Kärna and Romelanda, the countryside and the essentials take over. The archipelago and Bohus Fortress are close by for anyone who wants to get out."},{"type":"p","text":"The statistics point towards the affluent end. Median income of SEK 403,900 (2024) is among the highest in the country, the share with a low economic standard stands at 7 per cent, among the lowest in the country and half the national average, and the share with post-secondary education is clearly above average. Unemployment is clearly below the national level. But the municipality is not uniform. Median income ranges from just over SEK 317,000 in northern Komarken to around SEK 446,000 in the Ytterby surrounding area, and the same sub-areas recur at the bottom and the top for education and economic vulnerability as well. Northern Komarken stands out as the area that comes lowest on several measures at once."},{"type":"p","text":"Safety looks good. The number of reported crimes, around 7,100 per 100,000 residents (2025), is among the lower figures in the country and sits well below the national level, and the municipality has no areas on the police's list of vulnerable areas."},{"type":"p","text":"Kungälv suits those who want archipelago and small-town life within reach while still having Göteborg as their job market, provided they can live with the commute or find work closer by. Anyone dreaming of a short, painless route to a job in central Göteborg should think twice, and it is worth checking the situation against train and bus links before moving."}],"kallor_en":"Draft.
