Instead people are spread across a string of smaller settlements along the E45 and the railway on the western side of the river: Nödinge, Nol, Älvängen, Surte, Skepplanda, Bohus. The municipality counts as part of Greater Gothenburg, and that charged location shapes daily life. Close enough to the city to be convenient, but too close to really build something of its own. Many live here without really living their lives here, and the small centres in Nol and Älvängen can feel tired and short on things happening. Some of the housing was also built close up against the motorway, with a view of the traffic rather than of the river that runs past but is rarely seen."},{"type":"h2","text":"Daily life exists, but is spread out"},{"type":"p","text":"Despite the lack of one unifying town, the basic range of amenities is reasonable. Counting the whole municipality together there are around ten restaurants, a few cafés, a cinema and just over a dozen grocery shops, from ICA Kvantum in Nödinge to Coop and Willys in Älvängen and smaller village shops further out. For anyone wanting to be active there is an ice rink at Ale Arena, a swimming pool, several sports halls and gyms. Two attractions stand out: the Repslagarmuseet ropewalk museum in Älvängen, where rope was once made for the East India ships, and Surte Glasbruksmuseum, the glassworks museum. Ale Disc Golf Center also has a reputation that reaches well beyond the municipality. Around it there are plenty of nature reserves, from Risveden in the east to the forests around Hålanda, plus a handful of swimming spots for anyone wanting to get outdoors."},{"type":"p","text":"But most things require getting there. The amenities are spread across the settlements rather than gathered in one place, and if you live in Skepplanda or in the countryside up towards Hålanda a car is effectively a must. The essentials are available locally, a grocery shop and a school, but for a meal out or a trip to the cinema you go to another settlement in the municipality or into the city."},{"type":"h2","text":"Commuting, economy and two sides of the municipality"},{"type":"p","text":"Commuting is the hub of everything. The train line into Gothenburg was rebuilt just over a decade ago and stops in Nödinge, Bohus, Nol, Surte and Älvängen. One side effect of the rebuild was that the local upper secondary school lost pupils to the city and eventually closed, so young people now travel into Gothenburg to study. A car is more or less essential regardless, preferably two if both adults work, and bus services have historically been sparse at weekends."},{"type":"p","text":"Economically Ale is more stable than the slightly dreary picture suggests. Median income of SEK 387,000 (2024) is clearly above the national average, the share with low financial standard is low and unemployment is below the national level. The education level is higher than in most municipalities. But the average hides a clear internal spread. In Södra Älvängen and Östra Nödinge median income sits around SEK 430,000 to 445,000 with very few households in financial hardship, while Centrala Nödinge stands out in the opposite direction, around SEK 308,000 with roughly one household in four in low financial standard and the municipality's lowest education level. The main settlement itself therefore contains both the municipality's weakest and some of its strongest sub-areas within the same boundaries."},{"type":"p","text":"Safety looks good in the figures. The number of reported crimes, around 8,300 per 100,000 residents (2025), is well below the national average, and the municipality has no areas on the police's situation report of vulnerable areas. Ale has occasionally made local headlines, including when Hells Angels established a presence, but the daily life the figures describe is calm rather than unsafe."},{"type":"p","text":"Ale suits anyone who wants a house of their own and Gothenburg within a comfortable commute, at a lower price than closer to the city, and who does not need a bustling local centre to feel at home. Anyone looking for big city amenities, a lively local entertainment and working life or a distinct urban feel of its own should think it over, and perhaps weigh Ale against the neighbouring municipalities before deciding."}],"kallor_en":"Draft.
