Tåget stannar i Ed, så man kan ta sig vidare utan bil, men för det mesta hör bilen till. It is one of Sweden's smaller municipalities with just over 4,500 residents, and the centre of gravity is the main settlement of Ed on the long lake Stora Le. The rest is forest, water and scattered countryside. The distances to larger towns are felt in daily life, and the quiet and the nature are part of the price you pay, for better and worse. The border is never far away, and both Svinesund to the south and the crossing at Nössemark towards Kornsjø put their stamp on the area."},{"type":"p","text":"There is surprisingly little written about what it is like to live here. Dals-Ed rarely turns up where Swedish municipalities are otherwise weighed and measured, which in itself says something. This is not a place you move to on impulse, and the picture has to be built largely from the figures and from what actually exists in the settlement."},{"type":"p","text":"For its small size, Ed nonetheless holds together a daily life. There are grocery shops, a health centre, a pharmacy and a state-run off-licence, Systembolaget, a library and even its own cinema in Svea Bio, the kind of place that has become unusual in municipalities of this size. A couple of cafés and a handful of restaurants and pizzerias cover the daily needs, and around the lakes there are a few campsites for anyone wanting to get outdoors. Eds Motormuseum is a local attraction. The train stops in Ed, so you can get further afield without a car, but for the most part a car is essential. Nature is the big draw, with Stora Le, nature reserves and the forest on the doorstep, and a fair amount of shopping is done across the border on the Norwegian side."},{"type":"p","text":"The statistics paint a municipality with a thinner wallet but an unusually stable labour market. Median income is clearly below the national municipal median, and the share with post-secondary education is also clearly below average. At the same time unemployment is lower than in the country as a whole, and among young adults employment is among the highest in the country. The picture is that of a mill town and rural municipality where the jobs exist but wages are low, and where the share with low financial standard sits around the national average. Between the municipality's two areas the difference is moderate, from just over SEK 303,000 in the Ed main settlement area to just under SEK 337,000 in Äng. Safety speaks in Dals-Ed's favour.
