Kungshamn and Hunnebostrand are the larger settlements, and out towards the sea lies Smögen, perhaps the best known fishing village of them all with its pier, its boathouses and its summer life. Fishing runs deep in the local identity, right down to the municipal coat of arms, which is a flatfish. This is a coastal municipality through and through, where the sea and the season set the pace more than anything else."},{"type":"p","text":"For somewhere so small, Sotenäs has surprisingly much to offer, at least in summer. The restaurant scene is large for the size of the place, with some thirty establishments ranging from prawn shacks and harbourside inns to pizzerias, and there are plenty of cafés and ice cream kiosks along the coast. Smögens Hafvsbad and a handful of other hotels take in visitors, and the campsites are numerous, well over ten of them, which says something about how seasonal the place is. There is a small cinema in Hunnebostrand, a library in Kungshamn, a stonemasonry museum that reflects the area's old trade, and several sports halls and swimming facilities. A little further inland lies Nordens Ark, the wildlife park for endangered species, which draws visitors to the area all year round."},{"type":"p","text":"Day to day life is more pared down. Grocery shops, a health centre and a pharmacy can be found in the larger settlements, but for specialised shopping and a wider range of entertainment you have to expect to travel. Public transport is sparse, and a car is more or less essential. Unemployment is clearly below the national average, and employment among young adults is unusually high for a sparsely populated municipality, a sign that there are seasonal and small business jobs to be had. The education level is more ordinary and sits around the national average. Differences within the municipality are small, from around SEK 342,000 in Hunnebostrand and Bovallstrand to SEK 366,000 in the surrounding area, so there is no clear poor or wealthy corner.
