Här finns badhus, ett par gym, flera sporthallar och en arena. Molekylverkstan, ett science center byggt kring just kemin som präglar orten, är något av en lokal stolthet. Runt omkring ligger naturreservat, utsiktsklippor och ett par campingplatser för den som vill ut mot vattnet. Det som däremot satte orten på kartan, bokstavligt, var det stora slukhålet på E6 hösten 2023. Det blev en nationell nyhet, och i efterspelet vändes oron snabbt mot själva grundfrågan. Bohuslän och trakten kring Göta älv är sedan länge känd för jordskred, och kritiken handlar om att man lät bebygga nära E6 trots varningar från SGI och länsstyrelsen. For its size, the town has an unusually large amount to offer. Around twenty restaurants, from Harrys to Thai and sushi, around ten cafés, a cinema at Fregatten and shops for most everyday needs. There is a swimming pool, a couple of gyms, several sports halls and an arena. Molekylverkstan, a science centre built around the very chemistry that defines the town, is something of a local point of pride. Around it lie nature reserves, viewpoint cliffs and a couple of campsites for anyone wanting to head out to the water. You rarely need to leave the municipality for a coffee, a dinner or a trip to the cinema."},{"type":"p","text":"The nightlife is nonetheless small in scale. It revolves around a few fixed points, and anyone used to a big city's range of amenities quickly notices that this is a smaller place. Much of the social life instead runs through the club and association scene. At the Fregatten cultural centre, a recurring gaming day for board and role-playing games has been held for several years, exactly the kind of initiative that carries a place of this size."},{"type":"h2","text":"A commuter town with a healthy economy"},{"type":"p","text":"Stenungsund is fundamentally a commuter municipality. The proximity to the E6 motorway and Gothenburg means many people work in that direction, and the southbound train is part of everyday life for a large share of those who live here. Hope for better train connections keeps coming up. A car is in practice a necessity, preferably two if both adults work."},{"type":"p","text":"Economically, the municipality is prosperous. Median income is among the highest in the country, the share with a low economic standard among the lowest, and unemployment is clearly below the national level. The education level is higher than in the country as a whole. But the average conceals a clear divide. In Stora Höga and Hallerna, median income lies around SEK 470,000 to 478,000, while Hasselbacken stands out in the opposite direction with SEK 286,000, close to one in three households with a low economic standard and the municipality's lowest education level. Reported crimes lie well below the national average, and no areas appear on the police's situation report of vulnerable areas. What put the town on the map, literally, was the large sinkhole on the E6 in autumn 2023. It became national news, and in the aftermath, concern quickly turned to the underlying issue itself. Bohuslän and the area around the Göta river have long been known for landslides, and the criticism concerns the fact that building was allowed close to the E6 despite warnings from the Swedish Geotechnical Institute and the county administrative board.
