Andra beskriver en stad som är för liten och händelselös, där krog- och nattlivet är medelmåttigt och man till slut ändå sätter sig i bilen mot Göteborg när något ska hända. Handeln samlas kring Hallarna och stadskärnan, och runt omkring ligger naturreservat, golfbanor och en rad campingplatser ut mot kusten. Nästan tre av tio invånare har minst treårig eftergymnasial utbildning. Arbetsmarknaden håller inte riktigt samma nivå. Arbetslösheten är högre än i de flesta kommuner, och bara dryga 60 procent av tjugotvååringarna är sysselsatta, klart under rikssnittet. En del av den siffran är studentstadens logik, många i den åldern pluggar i stället för att jobba, men den rimmar också med berättelser om karriärer som aldrig tog fart och vänner som tvingats flytta för första jobbet. A fine location, nature and a bathing coast, two big cities within reach and direct trains that reach Copenhagen Airport in a couple of hours. Those who have actually lived here are more divided. Many find it pleasant, calm and just the right size. Others describe a town that is too small and uneventful, where the restaurant and nightlife scene is mediocre and where, in the end, you still get in the car towards Gothenburg when something is happening. Winter is grey and windy, and that is when it shows that the two best weeks fall exactly when the tourists are at their most numerous."},{"type":"p","text":"As an everyday town, Halmstad is nonetheless surprisingly complete. There are around ninety restaurants, some thirty cafés, two cinemas, a couple of theatre stages and a handful of museums, among them Hallands konstmuseum and Mjellby konstmuseum. If you want to be active there is an ice rink, a swimming pool, several gyms and around thirty sports halls. Retail gathers around Hallarna and the town centre, and around it lie nature reserves, golf courses and a string of campsites out towards the coast. It is not a place where you have to go elsewhere for a dinner or a trip to the cinema."},{"type":"p","text":"A recurring theme is that the social scene is slow to break into. Those who move here and want to find friends are often advised to go through clubs and associations, disc golf, a climbing club, board game evenings, rather than waiting for invitations. There is a local pride with a degree of self-deprecation, and the football club HBK means a lot. But the seven-hundred-year-old town centre has had tough years, even if much points to the trend having turned."},{"type":"h2","text":"The wallet, the jobs and safety"},{"type":"p","text":"The median income is just above the national municipal median, and the education level is well above average. Almost three in ten residents have at least three years of post-secondary education. The labour market does not quite hold the same level. Unemployment is higher than in most municipalities, and only just over 60 per cent of 22-year-olds are in employment, well below the national average. Part of that figure is the logic of a student town, many people that age are studying rather than working, but it also fits with stories of careers that never took off and friends forced to move for their first job. Anyone wanting to change jobs without moving often has to expect to commute."},{"type":"p","text":"The differences within the municipality are large. In Söndrum-Eketånga and along the coast towards Tylösand, incomes are high and low economic standard is almost a non-issue.
