The pedestrian high street has proper shops, from clothes and books to jewellers, and you quickly recognise both faces and shopfronts. Sandskogen and the beaches east of the town draw people all summer, and along the coast there are a handful of campsites and bathhouses. That estate agents like to count Ystad as part of Österlen irritates the neighbours further east, but the closeness to that area is undeniably one of the town's assets."},{"type":"p","text":"The harbour sets its own rhythm. When the ferries dock, the approach roads fill in short waves with Danish cars heading for the shops, and at the height of summer the area around the beach can turn chaotic, with tourists, cyclists and motorcycles jostling for space. The rest of the year it is so quiet that driving-school pupils from Malmö come here to take their test, even though the one-way streets and the tight parking in the old town have their pitfalls. Winter is mild and snow rare. The price for that is the rain and a persistent wind that features in almost every complaint about Skåne weather.
