Matbutikerna är många och utspridda, ICA och Coop finns i de flesta orter, och längs kusten ligger ett par mindre gallerior. Vill man röra på sig är utbudet ovanligt brett för en kommun av den här storleken, med badhus, en rad sporthallar, padel, ridanläggningar och tennisklubbar. Naturen är platt och öppen, med strandängar, naturreservat och Falsterbohalvöns fågelsträck. Vid samma tid infördes en omdiskuterad integrationsplikt för nyanlända. Bilden av ett välbärgat och ganska enhetligt samhälle är svår att komma ifrån, och den som trivs bäst i blandad stadsmiljö kan skava mot likformigheten. Skanör and Falsterbo with their shallow, long beaches are among Skåne's most loved summer destinations, and in summer they fill up with visitors from outside. Around thirty restaurants, around ten cafes and ice cream parlours, a cinema in Höllviken and several museums, from the amber museum to the Viking-age site at Foteviken. Grocery stores are numerous and spread out, ICA and Coop are in most places, and along the coast there are a couple of smaller shopping centres. For exercise the range is unusually broad for a municipality of this size, with a swimming pool, a range of sports halls, padel, riding facilities and tennis clubs. The countryside is flat and open, with coastal meadows, nature reserves and the bird migration over the Falsterbo peninsula. Eastern Höllviken and Ljunghusen are the most expensive addresses, while central and western Vellinge are somewhat more ordinary. Median income is among the very highest in the country, almost SEK 100,000 above the national municipal median, and the share living with tight finances is among the lowest in the whole country. The number of reported crimes per resident is just over half the national level, among the lowest in the country, and the police list no vulnerable areas. The housing supply is narrow, prices high, and the criticism that the municipality deliberately builds little keeps recurring. The Moderates have governed for a long time and by a wide margin. The municipality passed a local begging ban in 2017, had it overturned, pursued the matter further and eventually got the green light in court, in a process followed by the whole country. Around the same time, a much-debated integration obligation for newly arrived residents was introduced. The image of an affluent and fairly uniform community is hard to escape, and anyone who is most at home in a mixed urban environment may chafe against the uniformity.
