Den som inte hittar något i Malmö eller Lund får ofta rådet att titta på Arlöv istället, där det brukar gå lättare att komma in. För vardagshandel behöver man knappt lämna kommunen. Att äta ute är mer begränsat. Det finns en handfull restauranger och ett par caféer, men för en riktig kväll ute åker de flesta in till Malmö. Vill man röra på sig finns badhus, flera sporthallar, padel och några gym, och däremellan parker och en rad lekplatser för barnen. Snittinkomsten ligger strax under rikets kommunmedian, men det säger lite. I Burlöv södra är medianinkomsten lägre och ungefär var fjärde invånare lever med knapp ekonomi. I Norra Åkarp är inkomsten klart högre och bara ett par procent har det tight. Samtidigt ligger andelen med längre högskoleutbildning över rikssnittet. Kontrasterna är liksom kommunens signum. Två tågstationer, i Arlöv och Åkarp, tar dig in till Malmö på några minuter och vidare mot Lund och resten av regionen. Många klarar sig helt utan bil, vilket är ovanligt för en kranskommun. Tryggheten är kommunens svagaste punkt på pappret. Antalet anmälda brott per invånare hör till landets högsta. En del av det förklaras av att brott räknas där de sker, och med så mycket handel och genomfart blåses siffran upp, men avståndet ner till de lugnare grannkommunerna är ändå verkligt. The whole point of living here is the location. You stand with one foot in each city and avoid their housing markets. Anyone who cannot find anything in Malmö or Lund is often advised to look at Arlöv instead, where it tends to be easier to get in. For everyday shopping you barely need to leave the municipality. Eating out is more limited. In southern Burlöv median income is lower and roughly one resident in four lives with tight finances. In Norra Åkarp income is clearly higher and only a couple of per cent are in a tight spot. At the same time, the share with longer higher education is above the national average. The contrasts are, in a way, the municipality's trademark. You can live comfortably in a prosperous detached house area and have the harder-off parts a couple of blocks away."},{"type":"p","text":"Unemployment is among the highest in the country, and employment among young adults is clearly below the average. Ahead of the 2026 election the municipality became the national media's example of unemployment specifically, but that discussion was mostly about national politics and fairly little about what it is actually like to live here. Two train stations, in Arlöv and Åkarp, take you into Malmö in a few minutes and onward towards Lund and the rest of the region. Many people manage entirely without a car, which is unusual for a ring municipality. Safety is the municipality's weakest point on paper. The number of reported crimes per resident is among the highest in the country. Part of this is explained by crimes being counted where they happen, and with so much retail and through traffic the figure is inflated, but the gap down to the calmer neighbouring municipalities is still real.
