Nästan allt utbud ligger i staden. The whole island is a single municipality, today under the name Region Gotland, and the mainland lies a three-hour ferry ride away from Nynäshamn. Just under 61,000 people live here, and Visby is the only town. It is one of the country's driest and sunniest places, and it lives through two seasons rather than four: an overcrowded summer and a very quiet rest of the year."},{"type":"h2","text":"The July island and the February island"},{"type":"p","text":"That double life shapes everything. In summer the island is packed with tourists, Almedalen Week and Medieval Week fill Visby, and finding parking becomes impossible. Once the visitors have gone home, the town in practice closes by seven in the evening. Some people thrive on exactly that rhythm, others feel the downside. You cannot just get in the car and go somewhere, the summer guests can become wearing, and those who grew up here notice that people their own age have often disappeared to the mainland."},{"type":"p","text":"Despite that, the everyday range of services is surprisingly broad for an island with a single town. In Visby there are just over a hundred restaurants, around sixty cafes, several bakeries, a handful of bookshops and shops for most of what you need. There is a cinema in several places, a couple of theatre stages at Länsteatern and the Almedalen stage, and around thirty museums from Bungemuseet in the north to the equivalents of the Maritime Museum and old farmhouses around the island. For those wanting to be active there are swimming halls, around thirty sports halls and sports grounds and plenty of gyms. Around the island lie around forty campsites, roughly as many hotels and hostels and around fifty attractions and viewpoints, from Högklint to Galgberget. The nature reserves are numerous. This is not a place where you have to go elsewhere for a dinner, a trip to the cinema or a swim."},{"type":"h2","text":"The town and the countryside"},{"type":"p","text":"At the same time it is important to separate Visby from the rest. Almost all the services are located in the town. Outside the urban area, the countryside quickly takes over, and there are more churches on the island than shops. Hemse, Klintehamn, Slite and Fårösund are smaller settlements with the essentials, often a grocery store, a school and a library, but for a wider range you have to go into Visby. Living in the countryside means a car is a must, and distances become part of daily life. The ferry adds a further layer: a spontaneous trip to the mainland requires a booking."},{"type":"p","text":"The housing market bears the mark of tourism. Visby is a student town through Uppsala University's Campus Gotland, small and international, but rental rooms are hard to find. A common arrangement is a contract that runs for the academic year while the flat is handed back over the tourist summer. Buyers of holiday homes drive up prices in the most attractive locations. At the same time a family with children can get a house-owning life for a fraction of the big-city price. And then there is the question of Russia, which always comes from outsiders and always gets the same answer from islanders: fighter jets train, military vehicles are sometimes seen, no one seems worried. Many describe the island as the most peaceful place they have lived, with the door left unlocked."},{"type":"h2","text":"Plenty of jobs, low wages"},{"type":"p","text":"The economy has the profile of a tourist island. Unemployment of 3.5 per cent is clearly below the national average, but the median income of SEK 324,000 is just as clearly below the national municipal median. The labour market lives on tourism and seasonal jobs and becomes narrow for the rest of the year. The education level is nonetheless high, a quarter have at least three years of post-secondary education. The differences across the island are large. The median income ranges from SEK 364,000 in Visby södra (south) to SEK 258,000 in Hemse, where one in four residents lives with a low economic standard, and in Slite and Hemse the education level is the lowest on the island. The fact that employment among young adults is low says more about the student campus and seasonal jobs than about the situation itself. Safety is undramatic. No areas are on the police's list of vulnerable areas, and reported crime is somewhat below the national level despite the fact that tourist destinations normally attract extra reports."},{"type":"p","text":"Gotland suits those seeking sea, cycling distance and a community small enough that you are quickly recognised. Students, families with children swapping big-city prices for a house, and those who can cope with a quiet February. Anyone who needs a broad labour market all year round, spontaneous trips to the mainland without a ferry booking or a city buzz after seven o'clock should think it over once more."}],"kallor_en":"Draft.
