Fastlandet nås via Ölandsbron, med Kalmar närmast på andra sidan. På vintern är det en annan plats. Mycket av det säsongsbetonade stänger, och kvar finns en liten stad där matbutiker, apotek, bibliotek, vårdcentral och ett par sporthallar täcker vardagen. Utbudet är koncentrerat till Borgholm och Köpingsvik. Löttorp i norr har det nödvändigaste, men för bredden får man söderut, och kollektivtrafiken är pålitlig men långsam eftersom bussarna servar alla småorter längs vägen. Medianinkomsten på drygt 302 000 kronor är bland landets allra lägsta, långt under rikets kommunmedian. Samtidigt är andelen hushåll med låg ekonomisk standard något lägre än i riket, och arbetslösheten på knappt tre och en halv procent klart lägre än i de flesta kommuner. Det tecknar ingen utslagning, snarare en småskalig säsongsekonomi där få har höga löner. Skillnaderna inom kommunen är ändå tydliga: den södra kommundelen ligger högst i både inkomst och utbildningsnivå, den norra lägst. For most of Sweden this is a holiday destination rather than a place to live, and that shapes both daily life and the statistics."},{"type":"p","text":"As a destination the municipality is widely praised. The castle, the beaches, the rock formations at Byrum and the Harvest Festival in September. And the range of services is strikingly large for the population, though shaped almost entirely around summer. Around sixty restaurants, a couple of dozen cafes and bakeries, around forty campsites and around ten swimming pools and bathing spots. Added to that, an unusually large number of clothes shops and hotels for such a small municipality, a couple of cinemas, a bookshop and around ten museums and attractions led by Borgholm Castle and Himmelsberga. In winter it is a different place. Much of what is seasonal closes, and what remains is a small town where grocery stores, a pharmacy, a library, a health centre and a couple of sports halls cover day-to-day life. The range of services is concentrated in Borgholm and Köpingsvik. Löttorp in the north has the essentials, but for a wider range you have to head south, and public transport is reliable but slow since the buses serve all the small settlements along the way. A car is in practice the first choice."},{"type":"p","text":"The statistics give a mixed picture of the economy. The median income of just over SEK 302,000 is among the very lowest in the country, far below the national municipal median. At the same time the share of households with a low economic standard is somewhat lower than in the country as a whole, and unemployment of just under three and a half per cent is clearly lower than in most municipalities. This does not point to exclusion so much as a small-scale seasonal economy where few have high wages. The differences within the municipality are nonetheless clear: the southern part of the municipality sits highest in both income and education level, the northern part lowest. Reported crime is in line with the national average and therefore clearly above most municipalities of Borgholm's size, but the figure should be read with tourism in mind, since crime is registered where it is committed and summer visitors are never included in the denominator.
