For those wanting to be active there is an ice rink, several sports halls, a swimming pool and a gym. Around it lie lakes, nature reserves and a number of campsites for anyone wanting to get out. This is not a place where you have to go elsewhere for a coffee, a dinner or a trip to the cinema."},{"type":"h2","text":"The town and the countryside are two different things"},{"type":"p","text":"Here it is important to separate the town of Vimmerby from the rest of the municipality. Almost all the services are located in the town. Outside the urban area, the countryside quickly takes over. Storebro, Södra Vi, Frödinge and Rumskulla are smaller settlements with the essentials, often a grocery store and a school, but for the wider range you have to drive in. Living in the countryside means a car is a must, and distances become part of daily life."},{"type":"p","text":"Winter is also a different story from summer. Once the tourists have gone home it gets quieter, and then it becomes clear that this is nonetheless a small town in Småland, far from the pulse of a big city. There is a sense of community, but it often runs through club and association life. Sport, the church, hunting, the local heritage association. Anyone who does not get involved may have to wait for the social circles to open up. The train towards Linköping and Kalmar runs roughly every other hour and takes an hour and a half in each direction. A car is more or less a must, preferably two if both partners work. Jobs in the town are fairly few, and most do not require a degree. Wages are around the average and unemployment a little below. A striking number of young people work, often straight after school, since there are jobs here that hire early, not least within tourism.
