The castle by the sound, the historic city centre and the Öland bridge as a gateway to one of the country's most popular summer islands. In the endless where-should-one-live discussions, Kalmar is one of the recurring answers, and the tone is strikingly warm. A beautiful city of a manageable size, easy to get around, with the sea and nature close at hand. What weighs heaviest for many is the smell of the sea, the calm and the closeness to Öland, and the fact that the south-east coast usually tops the sunshine league. Late summer and early autumn are the area's best time. The most common objection is almost affectionate: kalmaritiskan, the local dialect, which some newcomers name as the city's only real flaw."},{"type":"h2","text":"A complete city by the sea"},{"type":"p","text":"This is a city where most things are available. Around sixty restaurants, a couple of dozen cafes, around ten bars and a nightclub, two cinemas and two theatre stages. Added to that are museums led by the county museum, two shopping centres, department stores and a large range of shops, from clothing and electronics to bookshops. For those wanting to be active there are several swimming pools, a couple of dozen sports halls and gyms, an ice rink and plenty of sports grounds. Around the city lie around forty parks and green spaces and around ten campsites, and Öland is one bridge away. There is also a county hospital here, which makes Kalmar the region's centre of gravity for healthcare. In short, it is not a place where you have to go elsewhere for a dinner, a trip to the cinema or an errand."},{"type":"p","text":"The university gives the city its own character. Students from across the country bring life and a younger pulse, and new full-time students have long been able to count on a housing guarantee. This shows up in the statistics in a way that at first looks dramatic: employment among young adults is among the lowest in the country, but this mostly reflects the fact that the city's young people are studying at an unusually high rate rather than being left out of work."},{"type":"h2","text":"Large differences between the districts"},{"type":"p","text":"Behind the warm overall picture lie clear differences. The median income ranges from just over SEK 436,000 in Berga down to just under SEK 256,000 in Norrliden, and in Norrliden four in ten live with a low economic standard, against three in a hundred in Berga. The education level follows the same pattern. The municipality as a whole is unusually well educated, with a third holding at least three years of higher education, but the spread between the districts is large. Safety overall is good, but the figure for reported crime is above the national average. It should be read with caution, since crime is registered where it is committed and a regional city with trade and summer tourism attracts reports, but it deserves mention alongside the city's self-image. No areas are on the police's list of vulnerable areas."},{"type":"h2","text":"The location is the catch"},{"type":"p","text":"What makes people hesitate is rarely the city itself, but the location. Eastern Småland is something of an infrastructure shadow. The big cities all lie far away, and it is more awkward to get here than to similarly sized cities further west. The train north towards Linköping is described as neglected and prone to delays, and southward a change is required in Emmaboda for anyone heading to Copenhagen, even though the journey from there takes only a couple of hours. Anyone following the housing market would also do well to be prepared for bidding wars, since asking prices are often set below what sellers intend to accept."},{"type":"p","text":"Kalmar suits those who want a complete smaller city by the sea: student life, history, coast and nature within cycling distance and Öland one bridge away, without the pace of a big city. Anyone dependent on fast connections or a broad big-city labour market would do well to work out the distances first. It is the location, not the city, that is the real catch."}],"kallor_en":"Draft.
