The Hultsfred Festival made this small industrial municipality in inland Småland known far beyond Kalmar county, until it moved to Stockholm in the early 2010s. What remains is a distinctly small-town municipality of just over 13,000 people, spread across a forested landscape around the main town of Hultsfred and settlements such as Virserum, Målilla, Mörlunda, Silverdalen and Järnforsen. The population has shrunk steadily since the 1970s, and the music lives on mostly through the metal festival Mörkaste Småland."},{"type":"h2","text":"An area marked by its industrial legacy"},{"type":"p","text":"This is old timber and industrial country, and the traces remain. Closed factories, the battery maker Varta which shut down in the 1990s and left pollution behind, the chipboard factory that lives on under IKEA's ownership. Decades of outward migration left empty flats, and during the 2010s the municipality took in a comparatively large number of newly arrived refugees. It was not without friction: Hultsfred reached the national press twice, once when the municipality refused to pay out support despite the threat of a fine, once when it accused Täby of having sent quota refugees here without reasonable conditions. The image of a small municipality under heavy pressure has stuck."},{"type":"h2","text":"What is here, and where"},{"type":"p","text":"The urban area of Hultsfred is more complete than the population figures suggest. There is a handful of restaurants, several cafes, a cinema, a couple of grocery stores from the larger chains and most of what you need day to day. For those wanting to be active there is a swimming pool, several sports halls and sports grounds. Around it lie some thirty nature reserves and parks, a couple of campsites and plenty of lakes. The Telemuseum, the Furniture Industry Museum and Virserum Art Hall show that cultural life has not entirely gone out."},{"type":"p","text":"But it is important to separate the main town from the rest. The range of services thins out quickly in the countryside. Virserum, Målilla, Mörlunda and Silverdalen have the essentials, often a grocery store and a school, but for most other things you have to go into Hultsfred. If you live outside the town, a car is a must, and distances become part of daily life. There is, however, a railway station in several places along the line, which is unusual for a municipality of this size."},{"type":"h2","text":"Economy, jobs and safety"},{"type":"p","text":"The statistics paint the picture of one of the country's economically weakest municipalities. The median income of just over SEK 303,000 is among the very lowest in Sweden, almost SEK 35,000 below the national municipal median, and one in five residents lives with a low economic standard, one of the highest shares in the country. The share with longer higher education is among the lowest there is. Unemployment of just over six per cent is clearly above most municipalities, even though youth employment stays close to the national average. The differences within the municipality are clear: in northern Hultsfred the median income is considerably higher than in the southern part of the main town, where three in ten live with a low economic standard. Safety is nonetheless good. Crime is below the national average and no areas are designated as vulnerable."},{"type":"p","text":"Hultsfred suits those who want cheap housing, sparse settlement and plenty of forest without ending up too far from the wider world, perhaps a family with children looking for a calm, nature-close upbringing. Anyone who needs a skilled labour market or city life should think twice. In an area that has lost residents for half a century, a cheap house is both an opportunity and a warning."}],"kallor_en":"Draft.
