Smeknamnet Lilla London används halvt kärleksfullt, halvt uppgivet om grå, regniga höstar och vintrar där soltimmarna kan kännas räknebara. Culture is there if you look for it: a concert hall, a theatre, two cinemas, the Småland Museum and the House of Emigrants. The range on offer is exactly what the size suggests, no more and no less, and the direct train to Copenhagen in around two and a half hours is often mentioned as an escape valve. And then there's the weather. The nickname Little London is used half affectionately, half resignedly, for grey, rainy autumns and winters where the hours of sunshine can feel countable. The campus sits by a lake, it is easy to make friends in the campus environment, and student housing is unusually often possible to arrange without a long waiting list. Families with children point out that the kids can cycle everywhere, that the club and association scene is large, and that house prices feel affordable compared with the big cities. Median income is just above the national average and a third of adults have at least three years of higher education, clearly above the national average. Yet unemployment is above average. The labour market is broad at the base but narrow at the top, technology jobs are few, and some people commute, including to IKEA's product development in Älmhult, half an hour away."},{"type":"p","text":"The differences within the municipality are large. Incomes range from low levels in Araby-Dalbo-Nydala to the highest in Östra Lugnet and Sandsbro, and in Araby around half of residents live with tight margins. That the university area looks even poorer on paper is, however, an illusion, student finances rather than poverty. Araby is on the police's list in the lowest category of vulnerable area and lies just a few minutes' walk from the centre. Reported crimes are just above the national average, a level that partly reflects the fact that trading cities attract more reports.
