Men arbetslösheten hör till landets högsta, runt det dubbla mot mediankommunen, och ungefär en av sex invånare lever med låg ekonomisk standard, klart över snittet. Inom kommunen är spannet stort. Medianinkomsten går från drygt 200 000 kronor i Nordöstra Hageby, där nästan varannan invånare har låg ekonomisk standard och få har läst vidare, till över 460 000 i Svärtinge utanför staden, med vattennära Lindö strax efter. Bilden är genomgående densamma. The industrial landscape, the water running through the centre and the compact city core make Norrköping a favourite for many among Sweden's mid-sized cities. Nature gets almost as much affection. The forests of Kolmården to the north, Bråviken and the S:t Anna archipelago to the east, the plain and the lakes to the south, and exercise trails ten minutes' cycling from the centre. Transport links are just as strong, with trains to Linköping roughly every twenty minutes, fast trains to Stockholm in just over an hour, and the Ostlänken high-speed line on the way. Housing is the city's trump card. There are vacant rental flats at reasonable rents even outside the problem areas, and house prices noticeably below those of comparable cities."},{"type":"p","text":"There is plenty of culture for the size of the place. The city theatre, the symphony orchestra and the Louis De Geer concert hall carry a rich stage life, the museums are many and strong, led by the Museum of Work, the art museum and Visualiseringscenter C, and Kolmården Wildlife Park lies to the north. The everyday offering is complete. Just over a hundred restaurants, around sixty cafés, a cinema and full-scale shopping with department stores, shopping centres and malls. The drawback is that the city half sleeps in the evening. Nightlife is thin, a couple of nightclubs and a handful of pubs have to do, and shops and cafés close early. The pace is calm, and someone who has moved here may find that making contacts goes more slowly than back home, while others, on the contrary, find people in Norrköping strikingly friendly. Two everyday details keep coming up. The university campus in the middle of the city makes itself felt. But unemployment is among the highest in the country, roughly double that of the median municipality, and around one in six residents live with low economic standard, clearly above average. Within the municipality the range is wide. Median income goes from just over SEK 200,000 in Nordöstra Hageby, where almost every other resident has low economic standard and few have gone on to higher education, to over SEK 460,000 in Svärtinge outside the city, with the waterside district of Lindö close behind. The picture is consistent throughout. In the police's 2025 situation report, Navestad and Hageby are classed as police-designated vulnerable areas. The Easter riots of 2022 hit Navestad hard in particular, but the trouble is still concentrated. Avoid a couple of districts to the south and it rarely shows up in everyday life, although Marielund is also among the districts with the most residents living on a tight budget. Another recurring worry is the schools, which are said to have a poor reputation.
