Mariefred is the municipality's centre for day trips, with Gripsholm Castle, the steamboat jetty and the inn, and the vehicle-history museum Arsenalen lies a little further out. Around it all, the Mälaren landscape spreads out with nature reserves, guest harbours and campsites. Stallarholmen and Åkers styckebruk are smaller communities with the essentials, a grocery shop and a school, but for most things people go into town or to Mariefred.
