Det är en av de orter som sällan syns utåt, och när den nämns i landet är det oftast som skämt. Den gamla sloganen \"En promille kan inte ha fel\" lever vidare, och i förbifarten buntas Vingåker gärna ihop med Flen och Katrineholm som platser med billigt boende, få jobb och lågt anseende. Utanför Vingåkers tätort tar landsbygden snabbt över, med mindre orter som Högsjö, Baggetorp, Marmorbyn och Läppe, där det nödvändigaste finns men för det mesta får man åka in eller över till Katrineholm. It is one of those places that rarely gets noticed nationally, and when it is mentioned it is usually as a joke. The old slogan \"En promille kan inte ha fel\" (a pun on \"a million can't be wrong\", literally \"a per mille can't be wrong\", promille being the unit used for blood alcohol content) lives on, and in passing Vingåker tends to get lumped together with Flen and Katrineholm as places with cheap housing, few jobs and a poor reputation. There is a grocery store or two here, a couple of bakeries, a handful of restaurants and pizzerias, a library, a swimming baths and a small ironworks museum. The best known attraction is Vingåkers Factory Outlet just outside the town, which draws shoppers from the area. Outside the town of Vingåker the countryside quickly takes over, with smaller places such as Högsjö, Baggetorp, Marmorbyn and Läppe, where the basics are available but for most things you have to go into town or over to Katrineholm.
