It is the river that gives the municipality its character. The hydroelectric power station, the salmon ladder and sport fishing that attracts visitors from as far as abroad. The built-up areas are split between Skutskär, the largest town, the urban area of Älvkarleby, and sparser countryside in between."},{"type":"p","text":"This is a municipality you live in for the location and the nature, not for the range on offer. Along the Uppsala-Gävle stretch, Älvkarleby comes across as the slightly nicer option, with trains from Skutskär, Älvkarleby and Marma, and the advice to live near a station comes up again and again. The towns closer to Uppsala are nice but more expensive. Here you get more for your money and have the fishing and the nature reserves on the doorstep, with several campsites along the river and the coast, including at Rullsand."},{"type":"p","text":"The range on offer is meagre and concentrated in Skutskär. There you find Willys, a couple of Coop stores, a pharmacy, a branch of the state-run off-licence Systembolaget, a library and a health centre. The restaurants number a handful, the cafés a couple, and for most things beyond everyday errands you have to travel to Gävle or Uppsala. The curiosity of the municipality is Dragon Gate, the Chinese inspired complex by the E4 motorway, mostly remembered as a costly failed venture. Anyone wanting café life and shopping is in the wrong place here. Anyone wanting to fish, hike and live cheaply by the water is in the right one."},{"type":"p","text":"Statistically, Älvkarleby sits near the middle, with one clear exception. The median income is just below the average for the country's municipalities, economic hardship exactly at the national level and employment in line with the country. But unemployment is clearly higher than in most municipalities, and the share with longer education somewhat below the national level. Anyone needing a broad local job market should weigh that in. At the same time, the differences within the municipality are noticeable. The median income ranges from around SEK 297,000 in central and north-western Skutskär to just over SEK 361,000 in the urban area of Älvkarleby, and in central Skutskär almost one household in four lives with low economic standard, three times the rate in southern Skutskär."},{"type":"p","text":"Reported crimes are high, above the national level, but the figure should be read with caution. In a municipality with under ten thousand residents, individual incidents produce large swings per resident, and no areas are designated as vulnerable."},{"type":"p","text":"Älvkarleby suits those who want small scale living by the water, with fishing and nature outside the door and two cities within commuting distance, and who can manage without a large range of amenities close to home. Anyone buying a home would do well to look at the differences between the districts. Central Skutskär and the urban area of Älvkarleby are noticeably different economically."}],"kallor_en":"Draft.
